I spent nearly all Saturday at the library. One of my assignments is to use paper resources to find the answers to questions. Like I need to find out the size of Mercury from a dictionary, and if a book is in print from a paper book. There are a series of reference books from a publisher Bowker which lists books in print and has bibliographical information. I already know the answer to the question because I found it in 2 minutes over the internet but I needed a book to cite. The reference librarians at the Anchorage Public Library gave me a good lesson in what not to do as a reference librarian.

I went up asking for help to find an alternative source to Bowker's Books In Print and there were two guys up there. One laughed and said oh I can find it on the computer and then I had to explain again I needed a paper copy for a class assignment so he passed me onto the other guy. And the other guy "helped" for about 30 seconds before asking me to wait so he could help the person that had just shown up at hte desk. I figured okay sure my question did require more time to help. And then it happened again and again and then tried foist me off to on of the computer stations saying I should just cheat.

After forty minutes not getting any help and decided to head on over to the University of Anchorage library because the online catalog said they had a copy. Well I got there, was laughed at yet again, and the reference librarian started to help. Like really help. She looked for this book all over the place and she could not find it. It was not on the shelf were it was supposed to be. Her theory is that they removed it because they are getting rid of catalogs like this because the online versions are easier to keep updated. So I gave up on that part of the search and focused on the other information hunt questions. It took me forever to find what I was looking for because to be honest I never considered using a dictionary to find out information on planet sizes, to me that's more of a job for an Encyclopedia but the assignment says I need to find a dictionary that'll give me this info. I also had to find out the real name for George Elliot and strangely I found a dictionary for pennames but needed an Encyclopedia source.

I already wrote to the professor asking for help on the dictionary and books in print situation.

The rest of the night went better because my husband and I went out to eat at this really nice restaurant to celebrate my 30th birthday which is on Feb 11.

And well Sunday I intended to do homework but instead ended up working on ebook formatting stuff related to the epub format. I was having weird formatting issues with my epub formatted stories. (like images not being centered) I think when I get stressed out I go into lockdown mode where I don't do anything. But tomorrow I need to finish reading some chapters out of the book and the articles so I can write a 600 word summary. With the amount of articles and chapters I think the challenge is figuring out what not to add to the summary.
