Favorite Stories of 2014

Dec 25, 2014 15:34

It's been a few years since I've made a favorite fics of the year posts. I thought it was time to start it again. Sorry if my reviews aren't all that great, I try very hard not to give spoilers, and I sometimes hit that point where it's hard to find new ways to say a story is amazing...The stories are listed in no particular order.

Marvel Universe (Avengers, Thor, Iron Man, X-Men)

Title/Author: proantagonist - Bargaining
Author Summary: Faced with an eternity without his brother, Loki strikes a bargain to change the past. Post TDW.
Pairing: Gen
Word Count: 110,464
Review: This story is absolutely amazing and had everything I loved! There are few Loki redemption stories of this caliber, I also loved the time travel aspect. Loki's story was heartbreaking and the author does not shy away from all the mistakes Loki and Odin made, or how crazy Loki had become. I loved the use of flashbacks to describe what led up to Loki's choice. I haven't cried this much reading a story in a long time.

Title/Author: antistar_e (kaikamahine) - Maggie Fitzgerald and the Saltwater Drip
Author Summary: Google politely tells her there are no poisonous spiders in Manhattan. Judging by her symptoms -- fever, super strength, newfound desire to shove herself into small dark spaces, and sudden reputation as a masked vigilante -- Gwen would beg to differ.
Pairing: Gwen Stacy/Peter Parker
Word Count: 79,626
Review: This story is amazing! I loved seeing Gwen as Spiderman, the plot, the character voices, the action were all spot on. I could not stop reading once I started. I just wish there was more in this verse.

Title/Author: Alex51324 - Ask Me No Questions
Author Summary: When Thor returns from Asgard to rejoin the Avengers, he brings Loki in tow--stripped of his magic and bound with a geas that allows him to speak only in response to direct questions.
Pairing: GEN
Word Count: 55,038
Review: I loved the concept, seeing how Loki dealt with not being able to talk unless someone asked him a question, along with the lack of powers. It had the perfect amount of hurt/comfort while Loki was still Loki. The ending was awesome. I lost sleep over this story.

Title/Author: Aria, filiabelialis - Find a Home
Author Summary: Loki lets his head fall back, a despairing smile baring his teeth. "What do you mean by home?"
Pairing: Loki/Thor
Word Count: 106,711
Review: This story didn't start off immediately captivating but once it got going I couldn't put it down. The character voices felt spot on, I loved seeing Thor adjust to being with the Avengers on Earth, I loved Loki's character voice and I never knew what he was going to do next. It doesn't hurt to mention that the sex scenes were incredibly hot.

Title/Author: Scyllaya - Bend Around the Wind
Author Summary: A few months after the battle of New York the God Loki appears back on Stark Tower under chaotic circumstances. This time however he is on the run. Tony Stark gets caught up in the crossfire and is taken along with the Aesir. Can the two of them ever make truce in order to get away? And even if they do, how does one escape from such a dark corner of the universe, when they are so very far away from the Nine Realms, that not even Loki knows the way back home. But first, they need to survive.
Pairing: Loki/Tony Stark
Word Count: 403,125
Review: I loved seeing how Loki and Tony learned to work together to survive, became friends, and then more. I loved the sci-fi action adventure elements. This was so much fun seeing how Loki and Tony survived traveling from one planet to the next trying to make it back to Earth. I also really enjoyed the original characters, the politics, and the blend of science and magic from the inventions Tony and Loki came up with. I've re-read this story and it was just as much fun the second time.

Title/Author: Pookaseraph - Iron Man: Director of S.W.O.R.D.
Author Summary: In the wake of the events of Captain America: The Winter Soldier, the Avengers need to pick up the pieces, and figure out where to go from here. Tony had a plan, at least he thought he had a plan, but Steve Rogers seems to have blown most of those out of the water.
Pairing: Tony/Steve
Word Count: 74,873
Review: I loved the plot, the character voices, and seeing how Tony Stark became director of the new organization. I had a hard time putting this one down.

Title/Author: ifitwasribald - What We Pretend To Be
Author Summary: Good becomes great, bad becomes worse. But people are a hell of a lot more complicated than good and bad. When half of the team is dosed with the super soldier serum, they all have to grapple with their own pasts and futures. But for better or for worse, they’re all in it together.
Pairing: Bruce Banner/Tony Stark

Title/Author: Liannabob - Refrain
Author Summary: Post Iron Man 3, Tony looks into why the rest of his team didn't help him. Mind-control, kidnappings and corruption, oh my.

Word Count: 95,104
Review: I loved the concept, the character voices, I was on the edge of my seat more than once and I loved how the story played out. I loved not knowing what had happened to SHIELD, who was under mind control, and seeing how Thor and Loki worked together.

Title/Author: Koszmar - A Dose of Reality
Author Summary: Set after Thor TDW. After getting sent on a mission by Jane to investigate residual anomaly readings, Darcy falls into a portal and a whole lot more trouble than she ever bargained for. When multiple people (including Darcy & Loki) start finding pieces of a mysterious stone with crazy powers, the universe starts to get a little less stable around them. The Avengers will need to stop a new power hungry villain, but they can't do any of that without Darcy's help. Along with a less than always helpful Loki, the team will find universe-shaking adventure and a destiny that goes back to the beginning of time.
Pairing: Darcy Lewis/Loki

Title/Author: Night's Darkness: The Long Game
Author Summary: Thor is banished, Odin sleeps, and Loki is king. A role he never wanted, but must uphold until Odin wakes. He must ensure his brother is safe, his kingdom avoids war, and his illegal marriage to Crown Princess Sigyn remains a secret, while the universe seems out to break him. Balancing politics, affairs, love and family, this will be the longest game Loki has ever played.
Pairing: Loki/Sigyn
Word Count: 327,708
Review: This story sucked me right in. I loved the character voices, the politics, the plot, all the details. My heart broke for Loki and I loved seeing him as King of Asgard. I also loved all the OC's and seeing how Thor handled being stuck on earth. I really hope the author writes a sequel.

Title/Author: Icemaidenstory - One Hundred Steps There
Author Summary: Prompt came from Norsekink and it's the size of a small story. I'm not sharing it here.
I will say this is an arranged marriage story. Loki is forced to marry the King of Vanaheim. If Loki doesn't cause trouble, at the end of the marriage, Loki will be allowed to marry the person he actually loves, Thor.
Pairing: Loki/Original Male Character, Loki/Thor
Word Count: 294,396
Review: This story sucked me in and I could not stop reading. I loved the character voices, the plot, it was heartbreaking and brutal in places. I can't stress how much I loved the world building and how well the author fleshed out the original characters. This story hit all my emotional buttons. I am looking forward to reading the sequel when it is complete.

Title/Author: khilari, Persephone_Kore - Overlapping Spaces
Author Summary: Thor returns to Earth a month after the Chitauri invasion to keep his promises -- to see Jane again, and take her to see Asgard, even if the rainbow bridge is still undergoing repairs. Not that Jane is complaining about watching the repairs. But she wasn't expecting Loki to be haunting the palace library, even in psychiatric care; and Loki wasn't expecting to make friends with Thor's mortal girlfriend.
Pairing: Jane/Thor
Word Count: 106,680
Review: I loved the character voices, the pacing, seeing Loki and Jane become friends while Loki recovers. I could not stop reading once I started.

Title/Author: Coneycat - Housemates
Author Summary: After falling from the Bifrost, Loki landed in the back garden of a small house in Bristol, England, and was taken in by the occupants-- supernatural creatures who know a thing or two about what it feels like to think you are a monster.

Now that he's no longer all alone, or entirely an outcast, Loki just wants a peaceful life. However, when you're the God of Mischief (even if you're technically an alien, and not a god at all) adventures just seem to find you...
Pairing: Annie/Loki
Word Count: 898,304
Review: This series is epic in length. It pretty much took me an entire week and a half to finish reading. I loved the plots, the character voices, I cried more than once. I also loved the crossover aspect. Some parts of the series were so good I was on the edge of my seat to see how it would all turn out. I'm just glad I found this series after most of the parts were complete. The last part currently posted was an awesome Harry Potter/Being Human/Avengers fusion/xover. I really loved Loki's pov in this series and covered some interesting themes.

Title/Author: griseldajane - Mad Man
Author Summary: In all the years they spent together, it never occurred to Loki that there might be a time when Thor would not be available to him. The god of mischief conceals himself, coming and going as he pleases, doing what he wants.

That Thor might one day do the same never crossed his mind.

Review: I loved the imagery, the character voices, plot, and Jane and her science skills. I think this is one of the best Jane/Loki fics I've found so far. It has a good beginning, middle, and end. I could not stop reading once I started.

Title/Author: nixajane - The Many Doors of Níu Heimar
Author Summary: In the weeks before Thor's coronation, Loki almost dies, not once, but twice. (An AU in which events conspire to keep Loki from the choices he made in Thor, a war is on the horizon and the chosen battlefield is Earth, and the Avengers assemble with an extra teammate and one less villain to fight).
Pairing: Loki/Steve Rogers
Word Count: 77,684
