Title: Gotta Be Wrong Sometimes
Fandom / Universe: Harry Potter / AU (
for_the_greater_good)
Subject: Cormac McLaggen/Astoria Greengrass
Background: I play in the rpg For the Greater Good (
for_the_greater_good). I play Cormac McLaggen (
cutebutdumb) while an awesome friend of mine and talented writer plays Astoria Greengrass (
scaredofheights). This is a fanmix for their CR in the game that I love.
Note: Those are hydrangeas.
Track List
Note: Maroon 5 is "their band" quite obviously. Because both Cormac/Astoria and Maroon 5 are awesome. I have no regrets. As the playlist goes on, I sort of begin to suck even more with explanations. And that's okay with me. It's the music that matters.
"Love Somebody" / Maroon 5 [
video |
lyrics ]
"I know we're only half way there
But you take me all the way, you take me all the way
You're such a hard act for me to follow
Love me today don't leave me tomorrow, yeah
But if I fall for you, I'll never recover
If I fall for you, I'll never be the same..."
Note: So perfectly Cormac to Astoria. (Minus any mention of his major screw up by omission.) The halfway there part certain relates to the fact they never said they were dating despite the fact that, yes, they were dating. Also Cormac is like this secret romantic but he'd never tell anyone or admit it so he really does really want to love somebody. Astoria just happens to be that somebody.
"The Man Who Never Lied" / Maroon 5 [
video |
lyrics ]
"Like a tragedy, like a dark comedy
Laughing at each other, laughing at each other, like oh oh oh
It isn't funny anymore, oh oh
I was the man who never lied
Never lied until today
But I just couldn't break your heart
Like you did mine yesterday..."
Note: The line missing from the quoted lyrics is "sometimes honesty is the worst policy". This song, to me, directly refers to the scene while they were in Paris and she confronted him about his arranged engagement thing to Katie. It's all too perfect for it and every time I hear the song, I think of that heartbreaking scene where the characters had minds of their own (and consequentially made things worse for themselves).
"Last Chance" / Maroon 5 [
video |
lyrics ]
"Out of sight not out of mind
You want the world, I'll give you mine
Cause your the girl I'll never find
And I'm the boy you've left behind
I know you think you're satisfied
And God knows how hard we try
But if you showed up at my door
I could give you so much more
Oh, what you gonna do?
I'm in love with you..."
Note: I'm starting to feel a little bad that a lot of these are Cormac's POV, but he is the character I play so I guess it's understandable. Basically, self-explanatory lyrics are self-explanatory. It just fits how Cormac feels that it's his last chance with Astoria and he wants it. He admits he loves her (ha, he did in game! without my permission.) and he wants her, but still, she's being resistant (understandably so).
"Fortune Teller" / Maroon 5 [
video |
lyrics ]
"I know that what I'm thinking
May not be on your mind
I know the song I'm singing
Is not your favorite kind
It doesn't mean I'm afraid
Of all the things that you say
But I just think we should stay
Stuck in the moment today..."
Note: Again, Cormac's POV. I do not mean to imply Astoria has ruined any "night" (but she did sort of ruin the Paris trip by ditching him, but that was his fault). Cormac and Astoria aren't always on the same page, especially with the whole engagement thing and why he can "justify" it all and she just can't agree. He wants to stay in the moment, just with her, and not worry about "tomorrow's mess".
"Sad" / Maroon 5 [
video |
lyrics ]
"Oh, but I'm scared to death
That there may not be another one like this
And I confess that I'm only holding on by a thin thin thread
I'm kicking the curb cause you never heard
The words that you needed so bad
And I'm kicking the dirt cause I never gave you
The things that you needed to have..."
Note: Cormac never gave Astoria what she needed or told her what she wanted to hear - like telling her of the engagement or that he actually wanted to be with her. But conversely, Astoria didn't tell him that she wanted to date him either. They both hid that. He just had something very bigger that he was hiding too. And I love the lines "I'm scared to death that there may never be another one like this" for them since for Cormac, this really is the first actual relationship he wanted, someone he really wanted to be with, and since he only found it once, who's to say he could ever find it again?
"F*cked In Love" / Cobra Starship [
video |
lyrics ]
"And now you're gone, but I'm still so fucked in love with you.
I'm still so fucked in love with you.
I tried to move on, I even kissed every girl,
On the VIP list, but I'm still so fucked in love with you.
I had it all and I thought I'd be okay without you.
I can write you this song, but it's not enough
it's not the same without you, same without you.
Don't don't don't give up, I still have hope..."
Note: If you are offended by adult language, do not listen to the song or view the lyrics. Thank you.
It's in game that they both are off screwing around after the non-break up break up (can you break up if you're not officially dating?). Astoria went off to Spain with her sister to screw around with hot Spanish boys and Cormac has been cruising the local clubs. They are so alike. They even have the same mentality to try to get over each other.
"Gotta Be Wrong Sometimes" / O.A.R. [
video |
lyrics ]
"We got more than a lifetime,
To make it all feel right.
So don’t apologize,
You gotta be wrong sometimes.
We got more than a lifetime,
To live inside these lines,
We were right all along.
You gotta be wrong
Gotta be wrong sometimes...."
Note: I think this song is more about some weird view on a one-night stand, but I choose to view it as someone who has broken up with whom they love and now wants them back. They were "wrong" to break up in the first place and getting back together would make "this right". Cormac and Astoria need to realize that once again - and in a different way - they gotta be wrong sometimes and just deal with what had happened and be together. Otherwise, they're just... alone. I love the lines "Maybe the world will let us stay / Give us back what it took away" for them because they had something, but the truth (Cormac being a moron) took it away. They want to be wrong and to get it back.
"Whataya Want From Me" / Adam Lambert [
video |
lyrics ]
"It messed me up, need a second to breathe
Just keep coming around
Hey, whataya want from me?...
Yeah, it's plain to see
That baby you're beautiful
And there's nothing wrong with you
It's me, I'm a freak..
There might have been a time
When I would let you slip away
I wouldn't even try but I think
You could save my life..."
Note: Cormac screwed up big time. He admits it. Now he wants to know what she wants from him now since he had no idea what she wanted from him before (because he never actually told her). (Settling on what actual lyrics to quote was hard. It's Cormac's freaking theme song for Astoria, I think.)
"I Did It For You" / David Cook [
video |
lyrics ]
"But my mistakes have led me
Far away from you
You turn away
From all those things
That I've been trying to say
And all those promises
I shouldn't have made
I did it for you
My open mind
Feelings I just can't reconcile..."
Note: I'm just going to say it. Cormac believes he lied by omission to her, for her. He did it for her. Now, he just wants to make amends and have Astoria understand he's sorry and he's learned from his mistakes.
"Different" / Acceptance [
video |
lyrics ]
"I wanted to see something that's different,
something you said would change in me.
Wanted to be anything different,
everything you would change in me.
I'm taking a chance,
this could be different.
This could be all I'm waiting for...."
Note: I believe this could fit both of them. Both Astoria and Cormac are craving "different" from what they have known. They don't want to be the norm of society. If they take a chance on each other, they are truly taking a chance on something "different". It's really poignant to the fact what they had or have going isn't something they looked for or wanted.
"Heaven Sent" / Hinder [
video |
lyrics ]
"It's freaking me out that I didn't see
You're so damn hot girl it's just crazy
And without a doubt I still can't believe
That you were right there in front of me
Never saw the chemistry
That was there with you and me
It's been a long time coming..."
Note: I chose this son and then I sort of forgot why. But it's there because I'm too lazy to take it off. Uh, it's the fact they were in denial over the chemistry they had in the beginning when they were fighting in the teashop and offending each other and then charming each other later? Yeah.
"All the Same" / Sick Puppies [
video |
lyrics ]
"It's all the same
And I'll take you for who you are
If you take me for everything
And do it all over again
It's always the same
Wrong or Right
Black or White
If I close my eyes
Its all the same..."
Note: It's the mandatory "accept you for who you are" song on a ship fanmix. But it's a pretty version of it, and I do feel it fits them specifically. Truthfully, I think it can be both of them to each other. They want to be taken for everything they are and in this case, they really do need to "do it all over again" but not with the same results. The results the first go were bad. New results are demanded for them to be happy.
"Fall For You" / Secondhand Serenade [
video |
lyrics ]
"Because a girl like you is impossible to find
You're impossible to find
This is not what I intended
I always swore to you I'd never fall apart
You always thought that I was stronger
I may have failed
But I have loved you from the start..."
Note: This song is for when they eventually give it another try without the lies by omission or the not admitting stuff out loud. And the fact they would official be dating. If they ever get there. Because with them, who the hell knows?
"Whatever It Takes" / Lifehouse [
video |
lyrics ]
"A strangled smile fell from your face
It kills me that I hurt you this way
The worst part is that I didn't even know
Now there's a million reasons for you to go
But if you can find a reason to stay
I'll do whatever it takes
To turn this around
I know what's at stake
I know that I've let you down
And if you give me a chance
Believe that I can change
I'll keep us together whatever it takes..."
Note: Cormac would, honestly, do whatever it takes for Astoria to give him another shot after Paris. He'd do anything. And if the plot goes the way it's planned to, he will be the semi-creepy, but sort of cute and caring stalker who will try to take care of her when tragedy strikes to prove it.
"Stay" / Hurts [
video |
lyrics ]
"My whole life waiting for the right time
To tell you how I feel.
Know I try to tell you that I need you.
Here I am without you.
I feel so lost but what can I do?
'Cause I know this love seems real
But I don't know how to feel.
We say goodbye in the pouring rain
And I break down as you walk away.
Stay, stay.
'Cause all my life I've felt this way
But I could never find the words to say
Stay, stay...."
Note: Honestly, Cormac just wanted to her to stay. If he could have thought of anything that he could have said to make her stay, he would have. Astoria had every right to walk away, but Cormac hoped she would have stayed. Since she didn't, he has to win her back. Yes. Best lines of the song not quoted (and relevant): "So change your mind and say you're mine.".
