The Sohma curse was passed down through generations - rebirth after rebirth. Each spirit entering into a member of the Sohma family as the child was born.
The curse was reborn and strengthened each time a new Sohma processed by a spirit of the Zodiac was born. It only grew stronger when the God was born.
Everyone, but the God, wanted to break the curse and stop each rebirth. Some members of the Sohma family, not processed, even thought it might be better to kill off the processed children as they were born.
Rebirth was not something you could control though.

He divulged a secret few knew, including the Sohmas. He trusted her, but the words shocked her. It was undeniably the truth though. Kureno had no reason to lie. He gained nothing from telling the secret either. There was nothing to gain from telling Tohru that Akito -
That Akito -
That Akito was a girl.
The secret still left Tohru paralyzed. There was strength in the words, but nothing freeing. There was nothing to help Tohru break the curse.
But Akito was a girl, and Tohru couldn't tell anyone.

Kyo always thought the curse was a disease. As a child, no one wanted to play with him, including those possessed by the other spirits, and his disease had driven his mother to commit suicide.
As a teen, he fled. He wanted nothing to do with the Sohmas. But he couldn't escape them completely. So, he stayed with Kazuma.
When he met Kyoko, he didn't want to like her, he didn't want to talk to her, but she was persistent.
Then his curse, his disease had killed her.
He stayed away from others so his disease didn't affect them, too.

Ren came at the perfect time. She was the perfect revenge. She was the one to use to bother Akito like nothing and no one else could.
It was only fair. Akito had slept with Kureno, and he was allowed to indulge in pleasures outside of Akito now. Akito had found pleasure in Kureno; he could find pleasure in Ren.
Revenge was sweet. The agony would soon fade, and then Shigure could breathe again.
No matter the consequences, Shigure just wanted to end the agony the truth of Akito and Kureno's relationship had created by bedding Ren.

Machi had her own problems. She wasn't perfect. But she was beautifully broken. She was as broken as he was. She had skeletons in her closet.
That's why he cared for her. She didn't pretend to be someone else. Her eyes shined with genuine like for him when she looked at him.
She was perfectly broken, and reluctantly and slowly, she was healing him.
