Catch Up

Dec 14, 2008 16:34

I have been neglecting my Livejournal here lately due to being constantly busy the past few weeks. Let me see if I can catch up here:

I've become obsessed with a medical journal called Neuron. Last issue freaking blew me away. *THIS ARTICLE* talks about reconstructing images the brain has seen using fMRI. The far reaching implications of this are INSANE. Actually being able to recover an image in real time via fMRI from within the brain... They were already able to reproduce 10 pixel by 10 pixel black and white characters. Imagine in ten years a psychologist being able to study your dreams while you sleep as a form of therapy? Freaking CRAZY. Read the paper if you have the time. It is WELL worth it.

Hilarious Stereotype of the Month:

R. - "Hey, T., come here..."
T. - "What's up?"
R. - "Don't you like Elton John?'
T. - "No..."
R. - "I though all of your kind liked Elton John..."

(T. = Gay)

At least he took it jovially. Back in the office me and T. were laughing our asses off about it... I mean, come out... Stereotyping an entire sexual orientations music preference? The bad thing is that I actually think R. was dead serious about believing that. Old rednecks crack me up...

Anyways, I bought a NICE brand new toy for work... The Sharp MX-2600N! This thing is like the uberbeast of laser printers. TRUE 1200 x 1200 printing, not that 1200 x 600 crap other printers are advertising. Native PostScript 3.0 support so that my InDesign project look FAAAAAAAAABBBBBULOUSSSS! Touchscreen interface AND a slide out full QWERTY keyboard. On board 80 gig hard drive to store all my lovely documents on. USB support for my flash drive. Holds 5,600 sheets of paper. Gigabit ethernet. Full duplex printing. Saddle stitch finisher. The finisher is what sealed the deal for me... Get this, It will print and bind a 50 page booklet in full color all by literally clicking print... Seriously... All I do is lay out the book in InDesign, then select whether I want two staples or three on the spine and click freaking print. The machine then prints the pages, organizes them, staples them, then folds them. Paper in staples go in one side, nice booklets come out the other! All of this with an average print cost of only 1.4 cents per page... I spent more on this thing than I did my truck... BUT IT IS FREAKING WORTH IT!!!

Works been phenomenal  to say the least. I'm ALWAYS busy busy busy, but it is all work that I have been doing for the past four years or so more and absolutely LOVE. Plus the money is freaking AWESOME to say the least. Also it is great to still be in my 20's and literally almost at the top of the food chain.  I've NEVER had a job that energizes me this way. I work from the time they open the office till the time they arm the alarms at night. I'm  rarely drained after work and generally am so keyed up that I meet with various clients to handle their projects after work just to burn off some energy. Finished up the IP and am only doing maintenance and on-call service calls with them. Sprint has me on call 24/7. Several other major players down here have me and my team on call. I'm working with several upstart businesses down here trying to help them get off the ground and have a fluid design to them. I'm doing most of their work pro bono or in exchange for various items (such as furniture suites, beds, hardware, software, etc.). It works great for them because it is very little capital out of their pocket and it works great for me because I get the exact furniture suites I am wanting... In fact, I am working an AWESOME deal with Drinx to square away some of my Christmas shopping.

Anyways, it's been a GREAT year... had its ups and its downs (more of that in a friends only post...). Put nonetheless, just as I have said from the beginning, God has a plan for us all... Sometimes we don't want to go in that direction initially, but once we are there... The feeling is indescribable. Once you KNOW that purpose, things become a whole lot better.
