The trials and tribulations during 除夕

除夕 chú xī
(noun)
definition:
a. the day before Chinese New Year
b. last day to do springcleaning
c. the day that household appliances and equipment break down or spoil

Cases in point:
1. I spoilt the vacuum cleaner. That makes it the second vacuum cleaner I've spoilt in what, 4 years? 5 years? Conclusion: Me 2, Vacuum Cleaner 0.

... Ok it wasn't exactly spoilt. The dustbag just happened to fill up to the max just as I was 15 seconds away from finishing up the vacuuming. But I honestly thought it died, because the whirring just went "WHRRRRRrrrrr-". Vacuum cleaners and me, we just don't have much chemistry.

2. My sister spoilt the mop. Now that is really something, because the mop head is new, as in, today!new. Half of the mop hair came detached from the mop head and they were just lying despondently on the floor like some discarded wig. I can't even imagine how that happened ahaha.

Also, my sister has a history of destroying mops. This is the first time she's destroyed a mop head, but she previously broke the mop stick in half while mopping under the sofa. She thought she could use the mop stick as a lever. Well, let's just say that didn't quite work out. :P

My mum was so worked up over springcleaning this morning, she told me, "Later after you mop the floor, use a damp cloth and clean the tables. We are losing the meaning of Chinese New Year!" Dude, what does that even mean? :/
