My husband's younger sister lives in upstate NY and fell out of contact with everyone for several years. We finally got a letter from her a couple of years ago saying her husband is abusive and giving the usual excuses abused women give so we could only correspond with her through a friend at work.
So we did. A niece who adored this sister when she was little and who hasn't seen her in 40 years, got in touch because she was contacted by a high school friend of the sister. So I told the niece the story and passed on the contact info.
Today, we got a nice long letter about how glad she was to get back in touch with people. It made her feel much better. She didn't say she is leaving the husband BUT she discussed plans that involve long trips back to Montana without him! Through the old high school classmate, she is now corresponding with several old high school friends and planning to come to her 50th class reunion.
I am over the moon! We really didn't know each other all that well before she vanished but I genuinely liked her. I liked her husband, too, but I guess both physical and mental problems have changed him.
But I persisted, sending a begging letter every year to the address we had and she finally got in touch and YAY!
So even though I had an epically crappy day at work, I am sitting at computer and smiling.
