Lady Hamilton

This painting by George Romney of this beautiful woman is shown because of a certain resemblance of the sitter with Eve. The same melancholic face, what the French call disinterested, meaning she couldn’t care a thing for nothing. This carelessness made her more appealing because you like to think that you can do everything you like with such person. She told me one day - in a reflecting state of mind - that she had absolutely no experience in love. I found that difficult to believe, a beautiful person like her. Where all the men she met in her acting class gay or blind ? but when I got to know her better I began to understand why she never has had a relationship of any kind because it’s very difficult to come near to her. Her indifference made it also that you would think that she cannot get any loving feeling, and you would only embarrass yourself by trying to get to her. She certainly has a sort of communication problem and this has a peculiar effect: she shows an indifferent attitude but when you work with her she can sometimes get really involved in what she is doing, so you get the feeling that once you can get her on your side, you can make her do anything. I remember her saying one day that it would take a lot to freak her out, and I believe that, because she is as beautiful as the statue of Venus the Milo but also as cold as the marble. I could never understand a story like Apollo and Dafne, now I do.
