on sex and love and men

This will really be relevent only to
oddmonster. I have so enjoyed our rambling discussion tonight.

What I meant to say earlier, about slash and male relationships... l said it better in another post, so I'm gonna quote it here...

The last thing that annoys me about sex is that it is used often as a shorthand to establish a relationship between two characters, instead of putting in the work to develop a relationship. It's almost harder IMO to establish a non-sexual deep friendship in fic, especially between two men, who in Western culture aren't allowed to be particularly emotionally demonstrative. So the sex is used as a crutch, allowing two men to love one another. As if men cannot love one another without the sex. Women are allowed to have this level of friendship (for the most part - there's a whole other story there I won't get into now) but men - not so much. So, it's like we use sex as a symbol of that friendship - like "see, they love one another. They just fucked, so I know it's true."

Not that I need to discuss further unless you're interested. Just that I knew I'd said it better before and it was bugging me. This was written about MacLeod/Methos on Highlander but I think it's even more relevent to Tubbs/Crockett, especially because the series made a point to establish this kind of relationship between them.

For anyone joining in, this isn't an anti-slash diatribe. Just a pet peeve of mine about how male relationships are written in fandom.
