So, last night I went to a five-band punk show at Minneapolis's First Avenue & 7th St. Entry. One band played with a furious pace, and sang their lyrics at the same rate. 99% of the lyrics were unintelligible. Another band had a slower delivery, but the singers growled their fast-paced lyrics without clarity. The last band, my favorite, was a bit easier to understand, but the lyrics were often too much for their very animated singer to wrap his tongue around. Syllables got rounded off, and sometimes whole words were sacrificed so he'd be ready for the next line.
What is it that we gather from song lyrics worth singing, but not worth communicating successfully? I would guess, in all three cases, that many hours were put into writing the words for the thirty-plus songs played. Why put in the effort if only the chorus has a chance of getting through? Mishearing a line or two is one thing, but not getting a chance at any verses... isn't that strange?
PS - None of these groups offer lyrics sheets at their shows.
