I just checked Fanfiction.net for Final Fantasy IX and was surprised to see how little fanfics there are for it compared to FFVII and FFVIII. Okay, VII is insanely popular and VIII also had a big following, but personally I loved IX a lot as well. I liked it better than VIII and kept me interested throughout, not just at parts of it. Perhaps it is that the characters are not as appealing or well loved as those in the two previous games, but I certainly found them more interesting than those of VIII generally.
And X, I just did not like much at all. It was too constricted, I need worldmaps to wander over , not an airship that you can't even fly through the air. Am having high hopes for XII though.
