Character name: Flynn Scifo

Age: 18

Gender: Male

Original canon: Tales of Vesperia

Target canon: Mobile Suit Gundam 00

Canon background: The Imperial Capital of the Empire, Zaphias. A city segregated into the rich, the middle-class and the poor. Those who are poverty-stricken receive little to no aid from the aristocrats and the Imperial Knights, who are charged with protecting the weak and helpless. On the contrary, the poor are exploited, being taxed far more than they can afford, and left to fend for themselves. This was the world that Flynn Scifo was born into. As a child, Flynn met another orphan named Yuri, and they became friends. Both were struck by the injustice of the system they were stuck in and swore that they would join the Imperial Knights to try and change the Empire from the inside.

Years later, they were allowed in, however, Yuri was frustrated with the lack of progress they were making and left the knights within three months. Flynn, who believed that he would eventually be able to rise up far enough to make an influence, stayed. He eventually became friends with the princess, Estellise as he worked towards his goals. As Flynn leaves Zaphias on a pilgrimage, he eventually meets up with Yuri again at several cities, where their different methodologies clash. Although Flynn does not approve of the way Yuri deals with problems (running in without regard for the laws and doing whatever he feels will resolve it), it is shown that his way is more effective than Flynn’s in getting things done quickly. As Yuri and his group stop a war from forming between the Empire and the Guilds, Flynn unwillingly takes credit for their actions, promoting him to a Captain.

As a Captain, Flynn loses sight of his ideals when he obediently follows morally questionable orders from above. However, when the situation goes downhill and Flynn is partially to blame, he gets his sense knocked back into him with Yuri’s help. Once again though, Yuri and company stop the danger and Flynn is promoted to Commandant. The problem, however, is not completely solved. As a world-ending catastrophe approaches, Flynn does his part by defending the citizens and dealing with the more political side of things. Although Flynn feels as if he doesn’t deserve his current rank and tries to convince Yuri to get credit for what he did, Yuri refuses and tells him that they’re supporting each other in their own ways by being in two separate positions. They then split and Yuri’s party goes to save the world while Flynn watches.

AU background: For many nations in the 22th century, the energy crisis that once plagued the world is now gone. The Orbital Elevator System, which consists of two rings held in orbit above Earth and supported by three elevators reaching into space, was developed to acquire a limitless source of solar energy. The three major power blocs of the world control these Orbital Elevators, and limit access to the energy to those countries that are in said blocs. This is why war remains a constant in the world, especially in the poverty-stricken Middle East. With the loss of their main export, fossil fuels, wars spring up as the citizens fight in their belief to try and bring back their days of prosperity. In a war between the Krugis Republic and the nation of Azadistan, children are recruited to fight. Propagandized to believe that they are soldiers of God, they throw away their old lives and enter the battlefield. And Adil Mittal, 10 years old, does just that when he kills his parents. As he participates as a part of the KPSA terrorist faction, he slowly loses his belief in God. On his final mission, he is saved when a mysterious mobile suit appears in a shower of green light, shooting down all the enemy mobile suits. He is the lone survivor of that battle.

Six years later, he is scouted by the organization known as Brave Vesperia, the ones that owned the mobile suit that had saved him before. The Gundams were unique mobile suits equipped with a GN Drive, a generator that powers the machine using solar energy. As he agrees to join and pilot a Gundam, he is given a codename: Flynn Scifo. He is assigned to the Gundam Sadalsuud, which is designed for melee combat. There, he meets Rita Mordio, Raven and Yuri Lowell, the latter of which he becomes close friends with despite Flynn’s more introverted personality. They train together along with the crew their spaceship, Hesperus, to prepare for the start of Brave Vesperia’s plan: the elimination of war through armed interventions.

Two years later, their first mission commences. All four Gundam Meisters show the technical superiority of the Gundams in comparison to the mass-produced units in the military. The message of Brave Vesperia is then delivered to the world: They will intervene in any conflict and do so repeatedly until the world stops fighting. As they perform more of their missions, the Gundams attract the attention of several people, one of which is Alexei Dinoia of the Union power bloc. Although their initial encounter is short-lived, they come out of it knowing that they would end up facing each other again. On the battlefield of another intervention, Flynn meets Yeager, the man who had brainwashed him into joining the KPSA. Despite wanting to kill him for what he had done, Flynn was at a disadvantage and was forced to pull back.

With Brave Vesperia’s interference, terrorist activities opposing them quickly appear and threaten the safety of civilians if they refuse to stop their interventions. Flynn is sent to Azadistan to stop the terrorist base in that area. It is there that he meets the princess, Estellise Sidos Heurassein. Although she is saddened by the state of her war-torn country, she still believes that a solution could be negotiated. Flynn, who thinks that more forceful methods are needed, speaks out against her, and heavily implies that he is a part of Brave Vesperia who may need to intervene if the fighting in her country does not stop. And his statement rings true when civil conflicts start. With the leader of the Conservative party in Azadistan is kidnapped, the unstable country is thrown into chaos as the Conservatives attack the current monarchy: Estellise. However, Brave Vesperia manages to take back the Conservative leader and deliver him to safety without fighting.

As the world begins to change from the influence of Brave Vesperia, the power blocs are more and more desperate to capture one of the Gundams. As such, the different blocs mount a joint attack on the Gundams by fighting in a war of attrition. Although the power of the Gundams is superior to the mass-produced machines, the sheer number of enemy units quickly overwhelms them. As they attempt to retreat, each of the Meisters are eventually captured until Flynn is the only one left. He is confronted by Yeager once again, but Flynn quickly loses from exhaustion. He is saved, however, when a trio of new Gundams appear and quickly throw the enemies into chaos. The crew on the Hesperus learn that the three new units are also part of Brave Vesperia. Wary, they meet the pilots of the three new Gundams: Clint, Tison and Zagi, collectively known as the “Hunters”. They tell the Hesperus crew that they will carry out their own interventions with their own methods.

As it turns out, their methods are more aggressive and destructive in addition to not caring about the possibility of civilian casualties. Flynn, Yuri and Rita eventually get fed up with how the Hunters perform their missions and a fight between Gundams begins. Clint insists on a retreat, but not before leaving a parting message to Yuri: Flynn was part of the KPSA, the organization that had been involved in a terrorist bombing that had killed Yuri’s family. Incensed, Yuri confronts his friend about this, with Flynn stating that it is true. He also adds that it was Yeager who had led the group, which diverts Yuri’s anger.

The world, which is beginning to unite, receives 30 imitation GN Drives from a traitor within Brave Vesperia. With the new technology, the world’s armies, combined into one form the UN Forces who look to rid the world of the Gundams once and for all. A frontal attack by the UN Forces on Hesperus force Flynn, Yuri, Raven and Rita into battle. They successfully fend off the assault, but not without a cost; Yuri, who was defending Rita, loses his right eye.

As the UN Forces close in on the Hunters, Flynn decides to go back to Earth to intervene. In the meantime, Yeager shows himself in front of the Hunters, single-handedly kills Clint and Zagi, and steals one of the Gundams equipped with the imitation GN Drive. Flynn arrives fast enough for Tison to escape and Flynn and Yeager have a showdown. During the battle, a new feature is triggered in Sadalsuud: Trans-Am, a boost that allows the Gundam increased performance for a short amount of time. With it, Flynn beats Yeager, although he manages to retreat in time.

Another UN attack is mounted on Hesperus as Flynn struggles to return back to space. The situation looks bad for Rita and Raven until Yuri, still injured and half-blind, sorties and takes out several of the enemy ships. However, when Yeager appears in the battle, Yuri relentlessly chases after him. Flynn, trying to fly to the battlefield, arrives too late when Yuri is killed. Despite the loss, he returns back to the ship and helps prepare for the final attack from the UN.

Enemy reinforcements come and Flynn is forced to go for the main enemy. Although he takes it out (but not without a lot of trouble), and unexpected enemy appears on the scene, with a customized unit. Alexei Dinoia launches a final attack on Flynn, and both skewer the other simultaneously. The explosions from the damage knock Flynn out and he mysteriously wakes up on the train.

Tl;dr aside, if you know the story of Gundam 00, you know the story of this AU. The main difference is the different interactions between the characters due to their personalities.

Powers: Nope. He’s athletic, knows how to use a variety of different guns and explosives, and knows how to fight with knives or daggers. In addition to that, he can pilot his Gundam well, although the chances of him being able to do so in the RP is pretty low.

Personality: In canon, Flynn is a determined and kind young man who believes in changing the Empire by abiding by its current laws and justice system. He is frequently described as “a perfect knight”, as he tries his best to help others while diligently following the orders given to him by his superiors. In sharp contrast to his best friend Yuri, Flynn tends to be more cautious in nature and has a tendency to look ahead into the future, rather than focusing on the here and now. However, both of them possess the same emphatic nature of wanting to help others at their own expense.

Flynn, being a knight, was likely expected to speak more formally (especially when deferring to those of higher rank), so he adopted a politer speech pattern. For the most part, he is serious when on the job, but will relax in the presence of friends. He also acts a bit prudish at times, believing that certain doings are inappropriate (such as a swimsuit comparison with the girls) and can be easily flustered by such things. He also seems to fanboy Schwann a bit. But that’s another story.

In the Gundam AU, Flynn is generally similar to his canon counterpart, albeit stiffer and more distanced from others. His politeness allows him to be civilised to most others, but not casual enough to be considered friendly. Part of this can be attributed to the emotional trauma of being a child soldier, and inadequate socialization, which makes it more difficult to connect with others. However, he will be a bit more open about his feelings when speaking to someone who he is more comfortable with, although it will still be difficult to get him to smile.

Flynn’s goal in the AU is also different from the game canon. Although the overall goal in both versions is “change”, how it should change is another story. Due to his background, the AU Flynn is more concentrated on the elimination of warfare because to him, it destroyed his life and that of many others. In addition to that, the “lawful” part is pretty much completely gone, since Brave Vesperia is considered a terrorist organization by most. This doesn’t mean that he lacks the morals that defined him in the game, though. He still avoids taking lives as much as possible by disabling the enemy mobile suits when possible, although if the situation requires it, he will go for a kill. He is also strongly opposed to having civilian casualties, and will attempt to stop it (to the point of facing off against his allies). He very much dislikes fighting, but because it’s the only method he thinks will have enough of an impact to eliminate war, Flynn continues anyways.

*PS3 version was used as a bit of a reference for the canon personality part since they flesh it out more and give him some… quirks.

Possessions: The standard gun for members of Brave Vesperia and ammo, his pilot suit (in addition to the shirt and pants that he wears under it) and a handheld computer.

Sample post:

This is the final battle. For the sake of everyone who has suffered from war, I will cut down the people who cause these meaningless conflicts. Even if I can’t change the past, I can change the future so that other people don’t have to be hurt by the fighting.

We will survive. And we will continue our interventions until the world drops their guns to live in peace.
