Sicily was an experience beyond words. I learned so much, saw some of the most breathtaking sights imaginable, and had some pretty amazing pizza and gelato as well. That island is steeped in history and it was an honor to have one of Sicily's top archaeologists as our tour guide/director/professor. It was also the first time that I have been surrounded by people who share the same interests as myself. Most people in my classes just take them for electives credits, so I have never been surrounded by others of my program until this trip. Again, experience and opportunity beyond words. I got some good tips and made some good friends.
Now, as promised, I have functional internet and will therefore upload some pics. Here goes.
This was our site at the end of the 4 weeks. The pictures don't fit together very well but I was in a hurry and I was balancing precariously on a wall (praying to Eugenides the whole time for balance).
French fries on a pizza, who could resist?
Me at the Great Harbor of Syracuse (hometown of Archimedes ^.^) and in the Valley of the Temples at Agrigento.
Busy bees on site.
Local fauna on site and around town.
We found a mouse nest while excavating, baby mice!!! We moved them to safety, of course :)
Then one day a lizard made his way into my bag on site and got a ride home to the hotel. A little while later we hear a rustling noise and trace it to my bag. Here's who we found. My iPod grew a tail! Poor baby, when I had pulled everything else out it was his last desperate chance at shelter.
One group found a frog (toad?) while cleaning the amphora pit. He was a big guy. He was also moved to safety by yours truely.
And of course the doggies. First two were at the gas station, they just needed some loves and treats. Second two were my doggies on the way to site, also in dire need of treats, but pat them at your own risk (you would probably lose a hand...). Sicily people don't take very good care of their doggies so I took it upon myself to carry treats everywhere I went. They came in handy.
And the feral kitties around the hotel :)
Group shots - First at Agrigento, then watching the sunset before pizza dinner, and lastly on site :D
And the views, now who can resist that? The beautiful, romantic Mediterranean. Love!
