So wait ... universal health care is having trouble gaining support in part because of abortion?

Well, that's easy.  Don't cover abortion, except in the case of medical necessity.

Duh??

I didn't even realize that insurance companies covered abortion.  They don't cover cosmetic surgery (except in the case of accidents/ reconstructive surgery).  (Right??? They better well not.)  They don't cover ... other unnecessary stuff.

Abortions, according to my mad Internet Research Skillz, are not that expensive.  A couple hundred dollars.  Yeah, it's a lot, but it's doable.  I think most people either should have about that much saved up/ should be able to borrow that.  Anybody who doesn't have a couple hundred dollars could be covered by charity organizations, I would think.  Plus there. are. other. options.  Adoption (and yes, of course the gov't should cover a woman's baby-making medical expenses).

I'm all about abortions.  Sixteen-year-olds shouldn't have to have unplanned babies.  But I'm also about changing the frivolity of our society.  All people should be saving up a couple bucks for their mistakes and emergencies.  Pregnant girls should be talking to their friends or family about it, to get both financial and emotional support.

I support universal healthcare because, let's face it, the average American is money-stupid.  People can't seem to figure out that if their health is a concern, maybe they shouldn't buy the latest video games, big-screen TVs, or expensive brand-name clothing.  (Somehow, these things have become a right and part of the "norm," making our lives much uglier, which is a totally different rant.)  I'm as pissed off as any conservative that Americans are not fiscally responsible, but unlike any conservative, I'm willing to help pay for their retardation.  If people can't figure out how to handle their money, take a chunk out and handle it for them.  As long as I also have access to the same benefits, and we can keep the bureaucracy down, it's all good.

You know what?  Throughout this rant, I have altered my views.  I don't think it's right for women to consider abortion an easy recourse.  I don't think it should be free, because it shouldn't even have to happen.  Condoms are not that expensive.  Neither is the pill.  (Consider $10/ month your anti-baby insurance policy, ladies.)  But I also don't think the world needs more fiscally irresponsible idiots.  (Or more mouths to feed.)  So I guess I alter my opinion -- abortions should be at least partially covered.

This is probably the cruelest I've been to My Fellow Man recently.  I've just been spending a lot of time this week listening to one moron in particular complain about how the gov't won't pay for this or that medical expense ... and then talk about all the shit he's going to buy, and then go out and waste a lot of money.

I wonder if people's stupendously obnoxious sense of entitlement comes, at least in part, through advertising?  Maybe I'll save up for an advertisement where a family is shown feeling happy because they, I don't know, took a walk in the park.  Played with a ball.  Read some library books.  Drew together.  Wrote.  Did anything BUT use expensive gadgets.

Hell, I'm taking my own advice.  I am going to have a TV-and-Computer-free week.  (Except for e-mail/school resources.)  So fuck you, Consumer Culture.  And, if they fucking makes you pregnant, dear Consumer Culture -- I'd pay for your abortion any day.

rant, healthcare, abortions
