Sakurai Will Star in a Wheelchair Basketball Drama!!
This is sure to bridge the way for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics
Fuji Television's Spring 2017 Drama "Kimi ni Sasageru Enburemu (I Dedicate This Emblem to You) Begins Its "Tip-off"
Arashi's Sakurai Sho (34 years old) will play the leading role in Fuji TV's Spring 2017 drama, "Kimi ni Sasageru Enburemu", as announced on September 7th. This is based on a true story about a J-League soccer player who changed his course of life after being involved in a car accident, and follows the athelete's failures and victories as he chooses to become a wheelchair basketball player. In his role, Sakurai will play wheelchair basketball. "This drama is full of strong emotions and passion for wheelchair basketball. I think it will send a powerful message," Sakurai asserted.
The Long Journey Back From Spinal Cord Injury
The Rio 2016 Paralympics began today, September 8th Japan Time. Sakurai hopes to build a bridge toward the 2020 Tokyo Olympics by playing a part in creating this masterpiece. "Kimi ni Sasageru Enburemu" is based on Kyoya Kazuyuki (45 years old), who was forced to leave the J-League soccer team and become a wheelchair basketball player after damaging his spinal cord. Sakurai will play Takajou Kazuya, the role modeled after Kyoya. Kazuya, a J-League soccer player chosen to be a member of the Japan National Football Team, had plans to get married when he injures his spinal cord, leaving him no choice but to live a wheelchair-ridden life. Despair overtakes him until he learns about wheelchair basketball. With the support of his wife, he finds a new goal: to play for the Paralympic Games.
The drama staff spent five years interviewing Kyoya and other wheelchair basketball athletes before stepping forward with the project. "Disability is not something to be pitied. This story focuses on individuals who find joy in their lives in spite of adversity," the staff stated. About choosing Sakurai to play the lead, they revealed, "He is a national superstar, and yet, he is also very relatable. He is perfect for this role."
For Sakurai, this will be his first drama since last year's Fuji TV New Year Special Drama, "Taishi Kakka no Ryourinin" (The Ambassador's Chef), and this new role is a challenging one. In another TV program, he had the chance to report on para-sports, and has even tried playing wheelchair basketball. Sakurai says there is significance in acting this role, stating, "It would truly be an honor if I could use this drama as a platform to bring more attention to para-sports."
Sakurai himself played soccer from 4th to 8th grade, and in this drama, he will play wheelchair basketball. Kyoya, who serves as the Assistant Coach for the Japan National Paralympic Team, awaits the outcome of his team's matches. Once the Rio Paralympic Games are over, Kyoya may coach Sakurai one-on-one and give him tips for playing the role.
Crude and Undecorated--Love Between Husband and Wife
"The complexity of human relationships is also a highlight of this drama. The raw, crude emotions when Kazuya attempts to transform his life, the deep love between a husband and wife... each scene brings forth different emotions for different people.
With the insight he has cultivated through his experience as a newscaster on NEWS ZERO (Nippon TV), Sakurai will no doubt accurately personify the pains and hopes of para-sport athletes.
Can't wait!! x3
