N: Good evening, this is Kazunari Ninomiya from Arashi. Tonight’s opening thought comes from radio pen name Nino no kagayaku me ga daisuki-san (*I love your sparkly eyes, Nino): “In conversation, I had never used ‘humongous’, ‘frikkin’ amazing’, or any other trendy terms. But the other day, my friend pointed to art that was on display at a train station and joked, ‘I made that during art class in elementary school.’ So, in response, I said, ‘Such humongous undertaking!’ I’ve lived sixteen years of my life without using that word so I had planned on never using it for the rest of my life. I ended up blurting it out; I was so disappointed in myself.” But is ‘humongous’ a
trendy term?
S: Hm... I wonder.
N: ‘Humongous’ isn’t a problem.
S: True.
N: I mean...
S: Why is the word called ‘humongous’?
N: Wh-I’m sorry?
S: Oh, sorry.
N: What’s that?
S: Why is it called ‘humongous’? Why so? Why do we say ‘humongous’ to mean ‘large’?

N: That was BUMP OF CHICKEN-san’s “Happy”. This is Arashi’s Kazunari Ninomiya bringing you BayStorm. Tonight, we’ll be reading e-mails from this segment as much as time permits: A New Segment, Please! First, we have radio pen name Koonaaka saretara ureshii na-san (*If my idea becomes a new segment, I’d be happy): “My idea for a new segment is called ‘Concert Memory’. This will be where you talk about memorable performances, favorite songs, and what you remember from your concerts. For reference, my favorite memory from your concert last year was how my heart fluttered when you played the guitar. Also, because Aiba-san sang ‘PIKA☆NCHI’, I love-” … “I love the song even more now!” So it says!
S: [laugh] Thanks a lot!
N: [laugh] So high and mighty.
S: [laugh]
N: You said that like you’re so superior.
S: No, that’s not true.
N: “Thanks a lot!”
S: Thanks a lot.
N: What do you think about this “concert memories” idea?
S: Concert memories? Well-
N: It’s not the type of segment you’d excel at.
S: True, it’s kind of... embarrassing to say.
N: “Embarrassing”? But you don’t remember a thing from our concerts.
S: But I do!
N: Are you sure?
S: Yes.
N: Then what was your favorite performance from our concert in 2004?
S: What? What was the name of that concert tour again?
N: See! You don’t remember.
S: [laugh] You’re right.
N: You can’t recall anything, so this segment is not one for you.
S: True, I’d have trouble with this.
N: You remember not one thing.
S: [laugh] Concert memories, huh?
N: Yeah. If someone were to mention something about it...

S: That was in 2008.
N: Three years ago, then. Has it been released as a DVD?

N: I don’t remember it being released. I would have remembered what the packaging looked like if I had received a copy. I don’t think it’s on DVD. The fans would know all that, too. It’s amazing how you all can remember these things!

N: Mm-hmm. This one is by radio pen name Nino to STBY wo ijiritai!-san (*I want to poke fun at Nino and STBY): “My idea for a new segment is called, ‘STBY Shichihenge’. (*note: This is a term used in kabuki, where the dancer rapidly changes his outfit seven times; contemporarily, it means to have a myriad of personalities and/or faces).”
S: Oh?
N: “During this segment, STBY will pose as Ninomiya-kun and answer the listeners’ mail.”
S: Okay.
N: “I think it’ll call for lots of snarky comments, which will make things really funny. I’d think so, at least...”
S: No, it’s not probable, it’s factual.
N: Oh, that it’d be a funny segment?
S: Whether it’s funny is another story. I’m positive about the snarky comments, though.
N: But... what do you think?
S: Yes?
N: “STBY will pose...”
S: ...as Ninomiya Kazunari!
N: Right. You pretend you’re me and answer the listeners’ questions.
S: Yes. Well... we could might not be able... to broadcast some of it.
N: “We could might not be able”? Which are you saying?
S: “We could might not be able”! [laugh]
N: Would we be able to broadcast it, or no?
S: W-We could, but...
N: Yeah?
S: I think Director Shinigami will have a hard time editing.
N: But if it’s worth the trouble, Shinigami will do his best.
S: I see.
N: Shinigami is a fine adult, you know. He won’t neglect work just because it’s troublesome.
S: Oh, right. It’s his job-
N: If it’s going to be funny, [laugh] we’ll just tweak some parts.
S: Got it.
N: The fact that he doesn’t edit usually isn’t because he finds the task tedious.
S: Oh, really?
N: Really, really.
S: He’d have a lot to do.
N: Right, so with that, if we tell Shinigami that it’s worth airing, he’ll do his work.

N: Could we be more optimistic about this?
S: Yes, let’s consider this in a positive light.

N: Yeah. Next is by radio pen name Jun-kun kara no fan retaa no ohenji kita yo-san (*Jun-kun replied to my fan letter).
S: Whoa.
N: “The name of the segment I came up with is ‘Arashi’s Best 3’. Listeners will send in their top three of anything: movies and dramas in which Arashi members have starred, Arashi songs... For reference, I-san...” [laugh] No, it’s not ‘I-san’. “I love all your songs, but really enjoy the optimistic lyrics in ‘Kaze’. I want to announce my top three for other categories as well, so please consider my idea!” I see.
S: Yes, I see. “Best 3”?
N: Best 3.
S: Hm...
N: What say you?
S: Huh?
N: About this “Best 3” idea.
S: Best 3.
N: What’s your “Arashi’s Best 3”, STBY? Dramas, movies, songs, anything.
S: Right. There are lots of categories.
N: Indeed. So... let’s not even worry about those.
S: “Arashi’s Best 3”?
N: What? It’s got to be “Arashi’s Best 3”. It says so.
S: I see.
N: It could include concerts, too, I bet.
S: Oh, so I can name off a category?
N: Be broad.
S: Well, then concerts come in at #1.
N: Okay.
S: Yeah. Variety shows come in at second place.
N: ...Okay.
S: Third place... what should I choose? The greenroom?
N: Greenroom?
S: Yes.
N: [laugh]
S: [laugh] The atmosphere in Arashi’s greenroom.
N: Ah, I see. [laugh] This is so like you, STBY. There was not even a hint of humor in your responses.
S: None at all.
N: To-the-point responses.
S: Right.
N: Well, the fans want to see this sort of thing!
S: They want to hear it!
N: There’s nothing wrong with wanting to know!
S: Right.
N: Not a bad idea. We’ve got more new segment ideas to read after this, but let’s take a break with a song. This is Hey! Say! JUMP’s “‘Arigato’ ~Sekai no Doko ni Itemo~”.

N: That was Hey! Say! JUMP’s “‘Arigato’ ~Sekai no Doko ni Itemo~”. This is Arashi’s Kazunari Ninomiya bringing you BayStorm. Tonight, we’ll be reading off lots of new segment ideas, but since this is the second broadcast of the month, we’ve also got this segment for you all: “Quiz: But it’s Radio!” This is a special segment that we do once a month. Let’s first announce the prizes you can win depending on the percentage of correct answers sent in: 35% or more and you’ll receive a souvenir from STBY, 50% or more and you’ll receive a collectible sound clip, 70% or more and you’ll receive some rare goods. Now, to review last month’s quiz. The question was, “Who did STBY impersonate? 1. Watanabe Yoichi-san, 2. Matsuko Deluxe-san, 3. AKB48-san.” Which did the listeners choose? Let me read some of the reasons for their choices. Radio pen name MSte ikimashita-san (*I went to see MSta (Music Station)) answered #1: “I’m dead positive the answer is #1!” I wonder why.
S: Yeah.
N: Hm. Radio pen name 2011-nen mo STBY to nakayoku ne (*Play nice with STBY in 2011, too) chose #2. Her reason: “I thought STBY-san likes this sort.”
S: [laugh]
N: And radio pen name Saricchi-san chose #3. Uh... her reason is, “I thought it was AKB because of his high-pitched voice.” All right! There were various reasons, but here’s the answer. The correct answer is... 2. Matsuko Deluxe-san! [clap]
N/S: Right.
N: So, among the winners, one will receive a sticker set hand-drawnby me. Radio pen name Poi-poi-poi-po-poi-poi-po-piina Arashi fan-san... why are you [laugh] laughing?
S: [laugh]
N: Why did you laugh just now? She writes, “I thought it was AKB, so I opted for Matsuko instead.”
S: Oh?
N: I’d like to give her all my stickers!
S: Right, thanks. Thank you.
N: And now, to announce the percentage of correct answers. Would you believe...?! 19%!
S: Whoa...
N: This is because so many thought it was AKB48-san.
S: Hm, I see, I see.
N: The percentage results are disappointing, but tonight marks the last of the “Quiz: But it’s Radio!” segment!
S: [pretends to cry]
N: [laughs hysterically]
S: This is the last?
N: [laughs]
S: I’m speechless.
N: Yeah.
S: Mm-hmm.
N: I should have announced this in a more solemn tone... but I only just found out myself.
S: Yes, right.
N: That this marks the end of this segment. I found out as I [laugh] read this script here.
S: [laugh] Right.
N: But this just means new beginnings, everyone.
S: Exactly. Because there is an end, there is a beginning.
N: Right. Because there is a beginning, there is an end.

S: Yes?
N: It’s okay.
S: Right.
N: Endings are not heartbreaking.
S: That’s right.
N: With Freeter, too. Because that drama ended, a new one can begin.

N: That’s how life works.

N: So... oh! “The reason we’ll no longer do this segment is because we’ll be incorporating a new segment from the [laugh] ideas we received during “A New Segment, Please!”

N: What I was saying isn’t so far off.
S: You’re exactly right.
N: Yeah. Now... whose new segment idea will be implemented? That’s why we’re reading these ideas.
S: Okay, okay.
N: See? This is by radio pen name Kurasu no ryuukougo wa STBY desu (*The “it” word in my class is “STBY”). Did you hear that?
S: Whuut?! Thank you.
N: [laugh]
S: [laugh]
N: “The title of the new segment is ‘Listener Correspondence’. You, Kazu-kun, and STBY will take guesses and whoever guesses wrong must play a punishment game. For example, you come up with a theme, like, ‘In which month is most of the listeners’ birthdays?’ Then, you ask the listeners to send in their birthday month, and you two take guesses. The one further away from the correct month attempts a punishment game. Also, please have STBY announce the segment title while ‘T.A.B.O.O’ plays in the background!”
S: Oh, this is pretty good. This could be interesting.
N: Yeah.
S: It’s like the reverse version of the old segment we did just earlier.
N: That’s right.
S: Yeah.
N: Which of us will get it right?
S: Hm, I see.
N: I see. Next is by radio pen name Kii-chan: “I got my idea from the word ‘danshari’, which became popular last year. (*note: This is a term coined by Yamashita Hideko, and it means to reevaluate your attachment to objects and throw away what is unnecessary) The listeners will send in e-mails of what they cannot throw away and why, and you be the judge as to whether they should throw away or keep.” Hm... she says she saw the word ‘danshari’ a lot. I didn’t even see it once! In magazines? On TV? Everywhere on TV?
S: Yes...
N: Everywhere? Are you sure? [laugh] Really, now.
S: This is the first time I heard it.
N: She wants us to decide whether our listeners should throw away or keep their belongings. “Packrat women”, “Packrat men”... I saw that on TV.
S: Ah.
N: On Super News. (*note: A news program on Fuji TV) Right?
S: [laugh]
N: I’m actually one to trash most things.
S: I’m most definitely that type.
N: Oh, then our answers for all of them would be to throw away the items.
S: I bet on it.
N: I throw out most of my stuff.
S: I trash everything.
N: [laugh] Wait, no. Why would you buy something in the first place, then?
S: [laugh]
N: [laugh] You trash everything? There you go again.
S: I even throw away things I’m not supposed to.
N: Oh, yeah? I... I give my stuff away.
S: Ah, t-that... that’s a better idea.
N: Yeah, because I don’t need it! If I see that I’m holding onto something based solely on personal reasons... I choose to give it away. To my juniors. I’m... aiming to live in a place that has absolutely nothing.
S: I get you.
N: Do you?
S: I totally do!
N: There’s absolutely nothing!
S: Completely bare, I understand.
N: Yeah. “My place...” Okay, so let’s say I’m out drinking, yeah? I’m out drinking with people, and they say, “Let’s drink some more at Nino’s place.” So I reply, “I don’t mind, but there’s nothing there.” [laugh]

N: And what do you know, there’s really nothing there. That’s what I’m aiming for, I’m planning that now.
S: [laugh] I totally get you. [laugh]
N: Then they say, “Whoa, there really is absolutely nothing.”
S: [laugh] Nothing at all...
N: That’s what I’m planning right now.
S: That’s a great idea.
N: So, I’ve been throwing away anything I can. Really.
S: There’s nothing, then.
N: Right.
S: Keeping it simple.
N: I want them to say, “There really is absolutely nothing!”

N: I’m aiming for that right now, and that’s why I’ve been throwing out most of my stuff.

N: Right, yeah. Like gold medals. I’m not supposed to throw away medals and the like.

N: That’s what my mom said.
S: It’s proof you won.
N: Yeah, it’s a gold medal I won in baseball, from when I played in Little League. She also told me not to throw away certificates of merit.
S: Of course.
N: Because my name’s written on it. She told me not to throw those away.
S: [laugh]

This is by radio pen name GANTZ suutsu wo kiru yume wo mita yo-san (*I saw a dream that I was wearing the GANTZ suit): “My idea for a new segment is called ‘Sounds impressive but actually isn’t, but still something crazy enough to boast about’. It could be something we keep secret from our friends and family because it’s not worth boasting about. We send those in and we can all discuss it. One can boast about the most trivial of things and rejoice about it. What do you think?” I think it’s pretty good!
S: Yeah.
N: What do you say? Do you-do you have an example, STBY? Oh, but you probably don’t.
S: You know... I don’t think I boast often. I don’t have anything to boast about, anyway.
N: Yeah.
S: I don’t bring such topics up willingly, do I?
N: You don’t. Maybe something like, “I haven’t slept for two days!”?
S: Oh, that kind of bragging.
N: What?
S: Huh? I guess it’s bragging...
N: “Sounds impressive but actually isn’t, but still something crazy enough”...
S: Oh, so... something along those lines.
N: In the past, though, it was the “in” thing to boast about how many hours you’ve been up.
S: Yeah.
N: Mm-hmm.
S: That was popular.
N: Isn’t this what she means?

N: Just so you know, our choices from the last round of picking were from radio pen names Mayo-san, with the title being, “Recommended Non-Arashi Songs”. Right, yes. Radio pen name Arashi no uta wa minna wo atatameru-san (*Arashi’s songs make everyone feel warm inside), who came up with the “Nino’s Shrink Room” segment, where listeners send in stories that angered them. Radio pen name Nino-chan to Aiba-kun kekkon shite kudasai-san (*Nino-chan and Aiba-kun, please get married) suggested “Back in the Day”, where listeners send in stories from moments in their lives that they’d want to relive again. Right, so... let’s all brainstorm, all of us.
S: Right, let’s!
N: Yeah.
S: These ideas are all pretty promising.
N: If there’s a segment you’d like us to do, there’s always that form you can fill out online.
S: Oh, okay.
N: You can send in your ideas.

(*note: This is a term used in kabuki, where the dancer rapidly changes his outfit seven times; contemporarily, it means to have a myriad of personalities and/or faces).”
S: Oh?
N: “During this segment, STBY will pose as Ninomiya-kun and answer the listeners’ mail.”
S: Okay.
N: “I think it’ll call for lots of snarky comments, which will make things really funny. I’d think so, at least...”
S: No, it’s not probable, it’s factual.
N: Oh, that it’d be a funny segment?
S: Whether it’s funny is another story. I’m positive about the snarky comments, though.
N: But... what do you think?
S: Yes?
N: “STBY will pose...”
S: ...as Ninomiya Kazunari!
N: Right. You pretend you’re me and answer the listeners’ questions.
S: Yes. Well... we could might not be able... to broadcast some of it.
N: “We could might not be able”? Which are you saying?

S: I think Director Shinigami will have a hard time editing.
N: But if it’s worth the trouble, Shinigami will do his best.

For reference, I-san...” [laugh] No, it’s not ‘I-san’. “I love all your songs, but really enjoy the optimistic lyrics in ‘Kaze’. I want to announce my top three for other categories as well, so please consider my idea!” I see.
S: Yes, I see. “Best 3”?
N: Best 3.
S: Hm...
N: What say you?
S: Huh?
N: About this “Best 3” idea.
S: Best 3.
N: What’s your “Arashi’s Best 3”, STBY? Dramas, movies, songs, anything.
S: Right. There are lots of categories.
N: Indeed. So... let’s not even worry about those.
S: “Arashi’s Best 3”?
N: What? It’s got to be “Arashi’s Best 3”. It says so.
S: I see.
N: It could include concerts, too, I bet.
S: Oh, so I can name off a category?
N: Be broad.
S: Well, then concerts come in at #1.
N: Okay.
S: Yeah. Variety shows come in at second place.

Tonight, we’ll be reading off lots of new segment ideas, but since this is the second broadcast of the month, we’ve also got this segment for you all: “Quiz: But it’s Radio!” This is a special segment that we do once a month. Let’s first announce the prizes you can win depending on the percentage of correct answers sent in: 35% or more and you’ll receive a souvenir from STBY, 50% or more and you’ll receive a collectible sound clip, 70% or more and you’ll receive some rare goods. Now, to review last month’s quiz. The question was, “Who did STBY impersonate? 1. Watanabe Yoichi-san, 2. Matsuko Deluxe-san, 3. AKB48-san.” Which did the listeners choose? Let me read some of the reasons for their choices. Radio pen name MSte ikimashita-san (*I went to see MSta (Music Station)) answered #1: “I’m dead positive the answer is #1!” I wonder why.
S: Yeah.
N: Hm. Radio pen name 2011-nen mo STBY to nakayoku ne (*Play nice with STBY in 2011, too) chose #2. Her reason: “I thought STBY-san likes this sort.”
S: [laugh]
N: And radio pen name Saricchi-san chose #3. Uh... her reason is, “I thought it was AKB because of his high-pitched voice.” All right! There were various reasons, but here’s the answer. The correct answer is... 2. Matsuko Deluxe-san! [clap]
N/S: Right.
N: So, among the winners, one will receive a sticker set hand-drawnby me. Radio pen name Poi-poi-poi-po-poi-poi-po-piina Arashi fan-san... why are you [laugh] laughing?
S: [laugh]
N: Why did you laugh just now? She writes, “I thought it was AKB, so I opted for Matsuko instead.”

N: Yeah. Now... whose new segment idea will be implemented? That’s why we’re reading these ideas.

N: See? This is by radio pen name Kurasu no ryuukougo wa STBY desu (*The “it” word in my class is “STBY”). Did you hear that?
S: Whuut?! Thank you.
N: [laugh]

N: “The title of the new segment is ‘Listener Correspondence’. You, Kazu-kun, and STBY will take guesses and whoever guesses wrong must play a punishment game. For example, you come up with a theme, like, ‘In which month is most of the listeners’ birthdays?’ Then, you ask the listeners to send in their birthday month, and you two take guesses. The one further away from the correct month attempts a punishment game. Also, please have STBY announce the segment title while ‘T.A.B.O.O’ plays in the background!”
S: Oh, this is pretty good. This could be interesting.
N: Yeah.
S: It’s like the reverse version of the old segment we did just earlier.
N: That’s right.
S: Yeah.
N: Which of us will get it right?
S: Hm, I see.
N: I see. Next is by radio pen name Kii-chan: “I got my idea from the word ‘danshari’, which became popular last year. (*note: This is a term coined by Yamashita Hideko, and it means to reevaluate your attachment to objects and throw away what is unnecessary) The listeners will send in e-mails of what they cannot throw away and why, and you be the judge as to whether they should throw away or keep.” Hm... she says she saw the word ‘danshari’ a lot. I didn’t even see it once! In magazines? On TV? Everywhere on TV?
S: Yes...
N: Everywhere? Are you sure? [laugh] Really, now.
S: This is the first time I heard it.
N: She wants us to decide whether our listeners should throw away or keep their belongings. “Packrat women”, “Packrat men”... I saw that on TV.
S: Ah.
N: On Super News. (*note: A news program on Fuji TV) Right?
S: [laugh]
N: I’m actually one to trash most things.
S: I’m most definitely that type.
N: Oh, then our answers for all of them would be to throw away the items.
S: I bet on it.
N: I throw out most of my stuff.
S: I trash everything.
N: [laugh] Wait, no. Why would you buy something in the first place, then?
S: [laugh]
N: [laugh] You trash everything? There you go again.
S: I even throw away things I’m not supposed to.
N: Oh, yeah? I... I give my stuff away.
S: Ah, t-that... that’s a better idea.
N: Yeah, because I don’t need it! If I see that I’m holding onto something based solely on personal reasons... I choose to give it away. To my juniors. I’m... aiming to live in a place that has absolutely nothing.

N: Do you?
S: I totally do!
N: There’s absolutely nothing!
S: Completely bare, I understand.
N: Yeah. “My place...” Okay, so let’s say I’m out drinking, yeah? I’m out drinking with people, and they say, “Let’s drink some more at Nino’s place.” So I reply, “I don’t mind, but there’s nothing there.” [laugh]

N: And what do you know, there’s really nothing there. That’s what I’m aiming for, I’m planning that now.
S: [laugh] I totally get you. [laugh]
N: Then they say, “Whoa, there really is absolutely nothing.”
S: [laugh] Nothing at all...
N: That’s what I’m planning right now.
S: That’s a great idea.
N: So, I’ve been throwing away anything I can. Really.
S: There’s nothing, then.
N: Right.
S: Keeping it simple.

N: Right, yeah. Like gold medals. I’m not supposed to throw away medals and the like.
S: Right.
N: That’s what my mom said.
S: It’s proof you won.
N: Yeah, it’s a gold medal I won in baseball, from when I played in Little League. She also told me not to throw away certificates of merit.
S: Of course.
N: Because my name’s written on it. She told me not to throw those away.
S: [laugh]
N: [laugh] She told me not to. Okay! This is by radio pen name GANTZ suutsu wo kiru yume wo mita yo-san (*I saw a dream that I was wearing the GANTZ suit): “My idea for a new segment is called ‘Sounds impressive but actually isn’t, but still something crazy enough to boast about’. It could be something we keep secret from our friends and family because it’s not worth boasting about. We send those in and we can all discuss it. One can boast about the most trivial of things and rejoice about it. What do you think?” I think it’s pretty good!
S: Yeah.
N: What do you say? Do you-do you have an example, STBY? Oh, but you probably don’t.
S: You know... I don’t think I boast often. I don’t have anything to boast about, anyway.
N: Yeah.
S: I don’t bring such topics up willingly, do I?
N: You don’t. Maybe something like, “I haven’t slept for two days!”?
S: Oh, that kind of bragging.
N: What?
S: Huh? I guess it’s bragging...
N: “Sounds impressive but actually isn’t, but still something crazy enough”...
S: Oh, so... something along those lines.
N: In the past, though, it was the “in” thing to boast about how many hours you’ve been up.
S: Yeah.
N: Mm-hmm.
S: That was popular.
N: Isn’t this what she means?
S: I think so.
N: Probably.
S: To show-off just a bit.
N: Mm-hmm. Or maybe that you can hold your breath for three minutes.
S: [chuckle]
N: That’s what she means, right?
S: Right.
N: Do you have anything? You don’t have anything, STBY!
S: I don’t! I don’t.
N: How come? Do you have any big achievements you can boast about?
S: I don’t have any of those, either.

S: No.

N: Just so you know, our choices from the last round of picking were from radio pen names Mayo-san, with the title being, “Recommended Non-Arashi Songs”. Right, yes. Radio pen name Arashi no uta wa minna wo atatameru-san (*Arashi’s songs make everyone feel warm inside), who came up with the “Nino’s Shrink Room” segment, where listeners send in stories that angered them. Radio pen name Nino-chan to Aiba-kun kekkon shite kudasai-san (*Nino-chan and Aiba-kun, please get married) suggested “Back in the Day”, where listeners send in stories from moments in their lives that they’d want to relive again. Right, so... let’s all brainstorm, all of us.
S: Right, let’s!
N: Yeah.
S: These ideas are all pretty promising.
N: If there’s a segment you’d like us to do, there’s always that form you can fill out online.
S: Oh, okay.
N: You can send in your ideas.
S: Right.
N: We’ll find it... [laugh]
S: Right. Whether or not we read it aloud on air is a different story.
