Dramas have really become a big part of my life since I started about 2 years ago. They are like one of the best forms of entertainment around :D Life would really be very boring if we didn't have such lovely-but-nearly-impossible-in-reality-situations to watch. Haha, I started with Korean drama craze, back in late 2006. Goong was the one which sparked it all off. I tried Full House as well and I love it to bits. Things cooled down a little as 2007 started, but not for long. As march rolled by and Hana Kimi (Taiwanese version) was released, BAM! I was hooked. I adored the show, and was consequently influenced to like Fahrenheit, with my favourite member being Jiro. The Taiwanese drama craze then took over. Hana Kimi, KO One, It Started With A Kiss. But I never finished the last two. They just weren't very good. Only when I was introduced to Why Why Love by my friend did it start again. Why Why Love was amazing! And as expected of me, Mike He became my new fave Taiwanese guy. Devil Beside You was equally good, if not better. Then came one of the best things which ever happened to me.
I was introduced to a Japanese drama. Hanazakarino Kimitachihe. Only after watching the Japanese version did i realize how bad the Taiwanese one is in comparison. There's no competition, seriously. The Jap version wins hands down. It was just so good! And thank goodness i watched the Taiwanese one first, cuz I wouldn't have been able to bear watching it if I had watched the Jap one first. I moved on to Hana Yori Dango and can I just say it was fabulous? Score another for Jap dramas! Of course, this is an extra significant milestone. I found out about Matsumoto Jun. It's really been him right from the start. So all eager to take on more Jap dramas, I tried another Jun drama - Kimi wa Petto. Superb. (I am going to run out of these adjectives soon) and Hana Yori Dango Returns. I just lapped up the Jap dramas. I think it was how compact the episodes were which attracted me. Of course, the cast and plot plays a huge part too :D
When 2008 started, I was amazingly on another track, the Singapore Drama track. I for some reason really liked Kinship. Hahaha, feels stupid now but yes, that was the way back then. I followed it and The Golden Path. And watched Mars VS Venus on mobtv. That's one of my all time favourite Mediacorp productions. Nevertheless, exams are important and I took a long hiatus from all the mad drama watching. When I resumed once again in September when EOYs ended, it was surprisingly an American drama which I picked up. Gossip Girl. Haha, those were the days. I stayed up till the wee hours of the morning watching 5 episodes at one go or something. Tried to watch Heroes and One Tree Hill but they either didn't load properly or couldn't keep my attention. When Gossip Girl 2 started, I did my best to follow it week by week but you know a drama isn't really for you when it starts feeling like a chore to follow it. The affair ended just after a few episodes. Moving on to another great milestone.
Yes, here it is! The appearance of Arashi in my life! I can't really remember exactly what happened on that fateful day, 13th-14th September 2008. It was something like watching clips of Jun, then Arashi. And then before I knew it, I'm in. Took me a whole day to properly learn their names and match them to the faces. Haha i can't believe that I couldn't tell Aiba and Sho and Ohno apart at first. I watched all the little clips of their shows and it was impossible not to fall in love with them. Day after day I would just come home and look for videos of them. I gradually discovered the huge online communities dedicated to them and no doubt about it, I wanted to be a part too. They also relighted my passion for Japanese dramas and are basically what I've been focusing on until now.
There were some dramas which I watched here and there which i didn't mention but yeah. Stuff like Romantic Princess and Bull Fighting I never finished. Brown Sugar Chivalries and Miss No Good I barely started - i couldn't bear to go on. And however much I love Matsujun, i must admit that the Hana Yori Dango Final plot could have been a little better. I mean, maybe just a bit more realistic? Won't everyone involved in their scheme feel extremely guilty if Tsukushi/Tsukasa got attacked by the bear and is left to die on the island, unable to get medical help? Yes yes, things like this won't happen in the drama world, but still. Oh, I left out the Hong Kong dramas. Yep, those were good too. Nothing evokes tears like a HK drama. I cried like shit watching Heart Of Greed.
Well then, here's my list of Asian dramas, watched, will finish watching and won't touch again! Hahaha (doesn't include S'porean dramas because there's just way too many and it was so long ago.)
In alphabetical order,
Japanese:
1. Absolute Boyfriend (Zettai Kareshi) - Hmm, i didn't like it cuz it deviates too much from the manga i think. Probably won't start watching it again
2. Bambino! - Gets a little slow at times but watchable. Plus, Jun's in it! :D
3. Bokura no Yuuki - Watched like an episode or two but i think it'll take a little incentive to continue. The set is so grey that it makes me gloomy too. On the plus side though, chibi Jun and Aiba!
4. Code Blue - Zomg, so very exciting! Not much on the romance side but A LOT of other ups and downs. I think my heart momentarily stopped when the Kuroda-sensei incident occured. Some of the gory scenes freak me out though.
5. Detective Conan - I only watched a bit of the Drama Special 2 but it was enough to creep me out. Reading the manga is one thing, actually seeing it is another. My heart is way too weak to continue watching this.
6. Gokusen - Can't remember why I stopped watching it but will definitely continue! Only that the teacher gets kinda annoying.
7. Hana Kimi - Ooh very good. As mentioned earlier, this one started it all!
8. Hana Yori Dango + Returns - Yay, love these too. In fact, i like the Jap Hana Yori Dango the best of all three produced. Maotsujun all the way!
9. Kimi wa Petto - Once again, one of my favourites. And it completely changed my attitude towards olderwomanyoungerman relationships. It just seems so possible with them. Haha
10. Koizora - Feels a little slow moving, but i'll try. I really like the manga! It's such a bittersweet story.
11. Liar Game - Oh this one is goooddd. Zilch in the romance dept but wayy high on the excitement level. The challenges and all are so super cool.
12. Myu no Anyo Papa ni Ageru - Not sure if this counts cuz it's a tanpatsu but yeah, another touching one. There was one quote/value which i really liked in this show.
13. Nodame Cantabile - No idea why I stopped but I suppose i'll pick it up again someday. The story's pretty cool.
14. Proposal Daisakusen - Only stopped cuz the thing wouldn't load. It's recommended by a friend.
15. Ryusei no Kizuna - Whee i liked this one, the plot was very cool, even if romance kinda fizzled. Didn't expect much though, since the 3 main characters are like siblings, even if not blood related.
16. Uta no Oniisan - Hahaha seems like this one will be a funny one!
17. Yamada Taro Monogatari - Ranks very high on the heartwarming scale even if romance isn't well done. The family ties are enough to soften your heart. Plus, there are many hilarious scenes.
18. Yoiko no Mikata - An old drama, a little exaggerated at times but very lovable.
Korean:
1. Boys Before Flowers - Ah yes, the Korean version. It doesn't really appeal to me. I blame the girl, she's annoying in the show. Really.
2. Dae Jang Geum - It's really interesting, like intellectually stimulating. I need to watch this completely.
3. Full House - Awesomely sweet. Fell in love with Rain after watching this
4. Goong - Very very good! Not just the plot and cast but also the setting! The whole thing was just so pretty and vibrant :D
5. Goong S - Oh puhlease, they shouldn't even call it Goong S. I only watched snippets of it and no way can it compare to the original.
Taiwanese:
1. Bull Fighting - Mike He is a big plus but I still prefer him with Rainie Yang. And I stopped watching this when the show became too ridiculous at one point. Pity. I was like "What?! What the hell?!"
2. Devil Beside You - Might just be my fav Taiwanese drama. Mike He was so good in here :D I actually felt sad watching the last few episodes cuz it meant that it was ending
3. Hana Kimi - Oh what should I say? Funny in its own way but pales in comparison to the Jap one. Nevertheless, it brought me lots of joy. :)
4. Hot Shot - Haha I only watched a teeny little bit of this. I suppose it's interesting, but Show Luo doesn't look very good here.
5. It started with a kiss - Couldn't finish this one, don't like Ariel Lin. She got super annoying. Liked the song though.
6. KO One - Couldn't finish this one either, the plot got ridiculous/boring. Girl was annoying too.
7. Meteor Garden + 2 - I think this is one of the earliest foreign dramas I ever watched, like when I was 10. Loved it so much back then, but watching it now, nah, doesn't do much for me. HYD's still better :D
8. Miss No Good - As much as my friend persuaded me to just bear with the first few eps, I really can't stand Rainie Yang's character's personality! Seriously a put-off.
9. Romantic Princess - Another one I never completed. Also got kinda ridiculous and meaningless, so yeah.
10. Brown Sugar Chivalries - HAHAHAHA this one is ridiculous to the point of ridiculous! All the references to the Jin Yong novels just make the whole story so, so laughable.
11. Why Why Love - This is a good one, lots of sweet quotes and scenes.
Hong Kong:
1. Better Halves - Ooh this one is super hilarious and sweet at the same time. Really like it :)
2. Heart Of Greed - Fabulous! I cried bucketfuls watching this. I really like Moses Chan's character in here.
3. Moonlight Resonance - Aka HOG 2. It seems good but i think i'll still prefer HOG in the end. I'm a sucker for happy families.
4. War of the In-Laws - Haha the period drama version is really funny, especially the Bu Liu Ming parts.
5. War of the In-Laws 2 - Modern version, setting's like Asian version of Devil Wears Prada and the story's pretty good. Ending is a bit of a let down though.
Haha that list makes me feel somewhat accomplished in a way. Then again, how many hours of my life have I spent watching all these man? And it's not exhaustive! There's still like S'porean dramas and if we want to talk movies and cartoons, that'll be a whole new long list. Hahaha tv rocks my socks :D On to conquer more dramas!
