In brightest day, in blackest night...

I just got a new tattoo on Saturday. An homage to my love of old school gaming, I wanted to dedicate this piece to my own nerdiness. I thought to myself, what game best represents what I love about gaming... and the obvious reply was, Final Fantasy. So with that in mind I then thought, what would be the most iconic 8 bit character from the Final Fantasy series to get tattooed on my flesh? Hmmm... a delicate conundrum. A moogle? A chocobo? Surely people would recognize these staples of the FF continuity, but I also realized that neither of them really made me feel too sure of going forward with the plan. It was then that it hit me, black mage. Yes, tried and true, the black mage has been a staple of Final Fantasy since its inception and is easily one of the most recognizable characters in the series. However, it's also one of the more common gamer tattoos people get since much like the conclusion I drew, it is obvious that people would be more likely to recognize it and the black mage carries with it, a certain bad ass factor with his shrouded face and adorable blinky eyes. So the next task at hand was to figure out how I could give my black mage tattoo a little more oomph, I thought about it for a while and concluded that my black mage should be doing something, not just standing idly by looking iconic. So with that in mind, I thought it'd be fun if my black mage was doing what black mages do best, casting spells. A fire blast seemed appropriate, so I sought out Larissa's tattoo artist to go about making this dream a reality.

This past Saturday was the Philadelphia Tattoo Convention, and it was here that I finally got the tattoo I had eagerly been waiting for. I wasn't sure of how big I wanted to go, but as with most pieces, you typically end up going larger than you had initially anticipated on going. The end result really impressed me. Not only did Matt capture the essence of the black mage, he did some subtle shading and fades to make the work appear more life like. I am so happy with my new tattoo! ^_^

Here's the line work being done.

and the end result!

I am really pleased. Larissa also finished her Joker piece and it came out so beautifully detailed. Matt really took his time incorporating detail into his jacket and coattails, even the spats on his shoes! I gotta give the man major props for his work. It was a blast and an experience getting tattooed at a convention. You get people walking by making comments on your piece as it takes shape! It's a little nerve-wrecking as you see some people stare skeptically at your intentions yet others were amazed and impressed at the pieces we chose for ourselves. If you ever have the time and means to go out to a tattoo convention, I recommend it! :)

On a less exciting but worthwhile note, I celebrated my 26th birthday the previous week. I'm getting old! This journal is fast approaching its 10 year anniversary this June. I'm not as into the upkeep of updating my LJ but I am going to try to keep these sporadic updates coming. Hope all is well with everyone!
