Wait yes I was….
So I was thinking about what I would do to make a Dalek costume if we end up doing a Doctor Who group and I think I’ve got some really cool ideas.
I instant messaged Reagan last night saying that I think I want to go with the ball gown idea, which of course I’m already planning it. I actually dug in to my closet and found my junior prom dress that has not seen the light of day since oh 1998 or so (to show how old I am) this dress is a satin number in a silvery color that will I hope be perfect to use as a foundation for the costume. The dress has a boned corset top so it’s already really strong so I think I can build on it without any problems.
My idea is to start right under my boobs and make a empire waist the will be the start of the body of the ‘bot. from there I’ll attach a set of 8 or so panels of ½ inch foam at 4 inches wide tapering down to 8 inches wide each covered in metallic silver fabric (tissue lame' maybe) and on each panel four half spheres in perhaps silver or another color. At the base more foam covered in black fabric (vinyl?) to make the base that will have a strong shape but be able to move. Up from the raised waist I was thinking that I would overlay the existing dress in the fabric I used for the panels mostly keeping it the same as it is with the boning and the wide shoulder straps and adding to that a cross bar right over the collar bone and around my upper arm making a band that might also be foam filled to emulate the cross bar on the Dalek’s. That band would connect by snaps to two arm gleeves that would be wide bell shapes and cover my hands that may also be foam filled and under the arm tubes attached to the top of each arm by Velcro on under gleeves a plunger on one and probe tube on the other. Then for my head a half bubble painted silver with small light bulbs on each side and a flashlight mounted on the front. From the bottom of the inverted bowl two lines of horizontal metal with bars hold them up and backed with screens to mimic the Dalek's upper section and allow me to see. This “hat” would hopefully fall about to the tip of my nose so you could see my mouth, which would have silver lipstick. Also I would coat my visible skin ( my upper arms and chest and back) with glitter.
Then what I really want to do is be able to roll like a Dalek and be all creepy and I could sew the costume to allow me to wear my roller blades under it but I’m pretty sure that you can’t wear rollerblades in the convention center even though the Otakon rules don’t forbid it. So if that’s the case I could go buy those sneakers that have the wheels that pop out. But I’d rather not buy something when I already own my ‘blades, not that I’m any good with them as I discovered again rolling around the house tonight.
Oh, also Reagan do you want to get a table together in the Artists Alley?
