Rant on Summer and Our Education System / Standards

Jul 21, 2009 21:56

In the words of one friend, "Homework makes us fat."

Really though. Even without normal school homework, I'm STILL stuck doing essays for US History class, on top of the SAT practice that I have not been doing. And it's pretty pathetic how I can't even concentrate now - constantly switching between AIM windows, iTunes, various Firefox tabs (one of which has FB's Mafia Wars on it. :x) and other crap doesn't make for good productivity, I know, but somehow, that's how it is.

I really don't understand how it's practically become a REQUIREMENT to take summer classes for credit. It's almost a standard now - either you do, or you "fall behind" the so-considered academically elite. I mean, you have people ditching class to go to nearby colleges to register...so they can get ahead for next year. Then you hear stories of the "supersmart" getting into college and then totally just slacking off. Something just doesn't seem right...

Now, unless anyone happens to know anything about 19th century American socialist utopianism, I should be getting off LJ.
