So.
I sent in my membership application for RWA, yesterday.
And, today I'm working on a dark fantasy that might or might not have romantic elements in it.
Yesterday I read a Silhouette Romantic Suspense, One Cool Lawman, which broke several of the traditional "rules" for romance. Not only was race something of an issue in the book -- the heroine is a "melting pot of ethnicity" -- but she was also a former drug user, has three kids from three different guys, and for a long while worked the streets. And, the author didn't shy away from all that -- in fact, it formed the main basis of the book because her former pimp and the father of her last child -- is the villain of the story. Add in one southern boy cop with a mama who is very conscious of race and social standings and you can see the author took to heart the whole opposites attract thing. And she showed their growth and eventual HEA very well.
Excellent book.
Also read The Secret Passion of Simon Blackwell a thick historical romance. I love tortured heroes as much as the next person (probably more than then next person actually), but I think this one dragged out a bit longer than needed. I still liked the book...but I can't help but think of Simon as Mr. Emo in my head now.
