that maybe i'm mellowing in my older age or that i've gained some experience or matured...or whatever, but i know that over the years my tastes have significantly changed. i use to really hate musicals. to me, "the wizard of oz" was ruined the moment dorthy opened her yapper talking about some goddamn rainbows. but i think the more my interest in film grew, the more expanded my cinematic universe became.
tonight i had a chance to see "the band wagon"
last week Cyd Charisse passed away and i failed to make mention of it. but Turner Classics aired her best known roles, which included "the band wagon"
here's a shot of Ms. Charisse...
she was simply breathtaking. now i've never seen any of her movies in there entirety, just clips like this one...

words cannot describe how completely sexy that number is. anyhoo, imagine my great delight when i actually had the chance to sit down and watch this one. now imagine my greater delight to find the film itself just f'n bad ass. Vincente Minnelli directed this masterpiece and now i find myself wanting to check out more if his stuff, because this film is short of mind blowing. everything just worked and even if it didn't, that one number from the clip would still make it a worthwhile watch.
it also occurred to me as i was watching why these kinds of films don't work today, and it isn't just because of the different sensibility between then and now. there simply aren't people that freakin' talented in this day and age. they were real masters and craftsman in those days and in that realization, i've come to gain an appreciation the kind of artistry involved in making a film like this one and others like it. so if you have a sunday afternoon to kill and feel like a good movie, check out "the band wagon."
