So, I set up my netflix queue with a block of kung-fu and other general 70s genre movies. Today I got "Dolemite" and Black Belt Jones. I watched "Dolemite" tonight and it made me think about MADTV and the sketches w/ Ares Spiers and Will Sasso as the racist sheriff. The actually movie is even funnier than those sketches and those sketches were pretty fuckin' funny. So here's my list of 10 reasons why "Dolemite" is awesome...
1) boom mic shots...
for some reason boom mic shots crack me the hell up...i mean you'd think those kinds of things get caught in the editing...but not in this flick...i totally think this movie was edited by a retarded third grader...which brings me to...
2) the editing...
the bad and odd editing choices only enhances the "Dolemite" experience...the inexplicable jump cuts, the weird looping...it can only be described as a hot ass mess...but some how here, it just works...
3) the whole feeling that a bunch of people were bored and just decided they'd spend the rest of the week making a movie...
4) the extremely odd and bad acting...
5) the belief that if you know karate that somehow you can magically defeat a bullet...
6) Dolemite math:
"Tell Willie Green he's got 24 hours to get out of my club and 23 of them are up..."
that shit's just priceless son...
7) "Willie Green" is a name that incites fear into the hearts of men...
8) the allusion that the mayor of L.A. might live in Inglewood...go figure that one...
9) Creeper, the Hamburger Pimp...
10) THE SIGNIFYING MONKEY!!...
if you know anything about Rudy Ray Moore, you know that the "signifying monkey" is the crown jewel in his stand up act...
I think it's pretty safe to say that the shit I find hilarious usually has everyones else scratchin' their heads...but to see "Dolemite" is to experience incidental comedy at its best.
