"Don't want another pretender..."

Mariah Carey's Music Box was one of the first CD's I owned, when I was fourteen or fifteen. (I only had a couple of tapes before that; Roxette, Ace of Base, 2 Unlimited, some tapes from the Swedish tryouts for Eurovision Song Contest... and, yes, of course Sofia Källgren whom I adored...) I don't know what it was now that suddenly made me play it; I haven't since... I don't even know when. But it looks like I can still sing along to the opening track as if I've listened to it all these years. Interesting how the brain works, isn't it?

"...won't you please come along, 'cause I wanna share forever with you, baby..."

ETA: I'm listening to Anna Vissi on Spotify now (because YouTube has been taken over by monkey, or whatever the error message said!). I heard her the first time in ESC in 2006, singing "Everything". (...Here it comes on my playlist now. On second thought, I'm skipping this one today. The other songs are in Greek so I don't understand them.) I liked the song and I liked her voice. Then I didn't think of it for four or so years. Something or other made me remember the song and I looked her up, and found that I dislike some of her songs but I really like many others.

For me, voices are very important, most of the time. If I really dislike the song/style, then it doesn't matter if I like the singer's voice, but if the choice is between two songs of a similar style and one has better lyrics and one is sung by a voice I like more, then I choose voice over lyrics. I didn't always feel like that, though! Or maybe my taste has changed. :) I used to like Celine Dion; I don't anymore. Some singers I like: Mireille Mathieu, Anna Vissi, Kari Bremnes, the singer in Vaya Con Dios... And Fanny Ardant and Anne Bancroft! No, they're not singers, but there are songs. :)
