Character: John Watson
Summary: John Watson’s thoughts about his new-found friendship with Sherlock as they walk away from the dead taxi driver.
Word count: 530
Notes: For mandatorily, because it was your enthusiasm that made me want to watch this finally! It’s probably not great - it’s pretty much what the title says - I’ve never before written a fic after watching only one episode of something before. (Also, I’ve never read any Sherlock fics!) But it made so delighted that I had to write this. :) I’ll keep on watching this for sure.

Married to my job, he says, John thinks. Well, that’s perfect, because that’s what I used to be. One cannot be at war and have one’s mind occupied elsewhere. That is a sure way to get shot.

Of course, that was what had happened.

He got shot, and now he is single and free.

The cane is sort of like an inverted wedding ring; a sign that says that once, he was taken. Once, he had something, and then there was only pain. John does not go anywhere without his cane.

A strange flatmate, this Sherlock. He is extraordinary, but friendless. He has a brother who abducts people and offers them money to spy for him. There are people who admire Sherlock Holmes, who even seem genuinely fond of him - and others who loathe him openly.

Everything has happened so quickly. Sherlock has talked and talked, and they have been running, and now they’re going for Chinese food in the middle of the night just after a murder has been shot, has been killed by John’s own hand, and they are laughing together…

John feels like he has fallen down the rabbit hole.

So upside down is everything, all of a sudden. But falling is perhaps not that bad? There’s the thrill of experiencing the unknown, the speed, the sense of unlimited freedom and the inevitable - all objects fall down when they are dropped; that is the law of nature, and what are human beings if not a part of Nature?

John can see that Sherlock can be a terribly annoying man, because sometimes, you might want some things to pass unnoticed, and nothing can passed unnoticed in Sherlock’s company. But for now, all John can see is how extraordinary Sherlock is.

It is a rare thing, but he is a man who can make John smile. He is man who can make him run again.

If I fall and lose my cane and everything that keeps me safe and sane, will you be there to make sure I don’t fall too hard?

John chuckles silently as he walks by Sherlock’s side. He’d never say such a thing out loud and he can very well imagine the look Sherlock would give him if he did. Sherlock wouldn’t take his hand and say “Sure, love!”

But he doesn’t have to. To John, it’s obvious already. There is a certain kind of knowledge that isn’t based on deductions, that can’t be found in books. A certain kind of knowledge that is the opposite of logic.

Does the brilliant Sherlock Holmes possess this knowledge too? He might, but perhaps not. And if not, then it’s probably going to take him a while to figure it out. When he does, it is probably going to be painful and strange for him, if he is not used to such things, married to his job as he is…

But if can leave my cane behind and run for you, John Watson thinks, then the least you can do is give me your hand. Not now; not tonight. Maybe not even sometime soon, but one day…

Because we walk well together side by side, you and I.
