”Come again soon!” Cora says, and kisses the woman’s cheek.
“I promise, darling!” the other one replies and her American accent is thick and full of hints of things Sarah doesn’t want to think about.
They smile, they eyes sparkle with mutual affection, and after the kiss their hands touch with an unwillingness to let go.
Her Ladyship’s childhood friend, who isn’t a bad person and hasn’t done anything wrong, but that’s not the point, is about to leave.
Why so pleased, Sarah? She should be happy that there is someone who makes Cora smile by reminding her about her childhood, her youth, her home, her past and everything that Sarah never was a part of and never can understand or share with her. She thinks that the mere sound of the woman’s voice is like music to Cora, surrounded by British accents as she has been for her entire adult life.
Sarah is glad to see the owner of that voice leave. Too glad, she confesses in her heart, although she tells herself she shouldn’t wonder if there’s anything more between the two ladies than what meets the eye…
No, don’t ever come again, she thinks and she has not even a hint of a smile to spare for the American lady’s maid.
And yet she knows that Cora is going to miss her friend; Cora is not going to smile anymore that day. Sarah’s going to be sad for her and almost wish for another visit soon.
