Summary: Sarah O’Brien is dreaming in the kitchen.
The workday is over and Sarah O’Brien is alone in the kitchen. She’s just sitting there, when she sees a sleeping cat in a corner.
“Shoo, you lazy bastard, shouldn’t you be out chasing rats?”
Sarah’s voice wakes him up and, taking her words as an invitation, he jumps up gracefully from the floor to sit on her lap. She finds herself then trapped at the table.
She knows she should go to bed, but doesn’t really want to. Branson read aloud from the news paper earlier. It made her thoughts wander; it was something about India, she wasn’t paying attention.
She has never been in India, but that doesn’t stop her from dreaming. She wants to see everything, especially the strange flowers in the jungle, and the tigers.
Sarah wonders what Her Ladyship would think of India. Would she like it? Oh, Sarah thinks so. The foreign colours, spices and scents would suit her, and Sarah thinks that if Her Ladyship lived in India she would surely have a tiger - quite tame, but still wild, and beautiful. Sarah would help her take good care of it under the heat of the Indian sun. What would it be like?
She loses track of time for a moment, she doesn’t know for how long, her hand moving gently over the animal in her lap.
“Shoo”, she says again.
The cat, with his own feline way of knowing when the word is an endearment, is still purring when she puts him down.
