Monty walks into his parents’ bedroom and finds his daddy there, alone. He is getting dressed for work and is buttoning his shirt in front of the mirror.

“Hey Monty”, he smiles, “have you had breakfast already? You’re right in time for helping me choose a tie.”

“Yeah!” Monty rushes over to the wardrobe and flings the door open. “Take the flowery tie - no, I know which one - the clown tie!”

“No, son”, Nathan laughed, “they are not for work, only for very special occasions like your birthday, or for giving mommy breakfast in bed on Mother’s Day.”

Monty nods; this makes sense to him. His uncle Peter always gives daddy an awesome tie for Christmas, and mommy gives one just as cool for his birthday. Daddy says that this joke is getting worse and worse, and it is a very silly competition between mommy and Uncle Peter. Monty doesn’t think it’s silly, but he knows that daddy never wears any of these ties for work.

“Here, Monty; what do you think of any of these instead?”

Daddy shows him three ties and puts them on the huge bed it’s strictly forbidden to jump in, and then his phone starts ringing.

Daddy goes out of the room to take the call, and Monty looks at the ties and tries to decide which one to chose. He knows which one he likes best, and he picks it up.

When he holds it, it becomes softer first, then see-through, and then it’s gone.

His daddy comes back in and asks him if he had made his choice, and Monty points to one of the two that are left.

“This one? Okay… You’ve got good taste…” Daddy puts the tie around his neck, and then he looks at the bed again. “But I thought I put three on there? Where’s the third, Monty?”

“In the Shadows”, Monty replies.

“What?”

Daddy looks confused, and Monty doesn’t blame him; how could daddy know about this!

“That’s where Simon says Paula lives”, he explains.

“Who is Paula?” Daddy looks around as if he expects to see someone in there.

“Simon’s friend.”

Monty’s daddy laughs and ruffles his hair.

“Right. So whenever something is broken or goes missing around here, it’s Paula’s fault, huh?”

“No”, Monty says, “she can’t break things; she just takes or borrows them.”

“I didn’t know you guys have an imaginary friend… But you tell her I want my tie back soon, okay? And tell your mommy I won’t be home for dinner.”

“Okay, daddy.”

When his father has hurried off to work like he always does, Monty goes to find Simon. His brother is stretched out on the big carpet in the dining room, reading a book about Winnie the Pooh.

“Read aloud, Simon”, Monty says. “Daddy says he wants Paula to give his tie back.”

His big brother looks up from the book.

“What did she take that for? She’s a girl; she doesn’t need a tie.”

Yeah that’s right; Simon didn’t think of that. Mommy and Grandma don’t use ties.

“Maybe she liked the color and wanted it as a ribbon for her hair.”

“Paula”, Simon says, “please give us daddy’s tie!”

“What is she saying?”

“She says okay, give her your hand.”

Monty stretches his arm out in the direction Simon is pointing and closes his eyes. When he opens them, daddy’s tie is in his hand and he puts it down on the carpet.

Simon smiles.

“Paula says there are cookies in the kitchen.”

Monty loves cookies just as much as Paula does, so he sneaks out there, and he’s lucky; the room is empty except for a tray of cookies fresh from the oven. Monty fills a plate and manages to get back to the dining room without getting caught.

Simon takes a cookie, and Monty takes one.

Then he takes another one, holds it in his hand and watches as it becomes soft, invisible, and then it disappears.

All three of them are happily eating cookies as Simon reads aloud to Monty and Paula.

Paula is their secret friend. Monty can give her things and Simon is the only one who can see and hear her. The grown-ups think she’s make-believe, but she’s not. She’s a real girl and she lives in the shadows.
