I think the not being able to read her thoughts is important later, but I forget why (it was some complicated boring thing in the fourth book that didn't make much sense). I don't think the sensitivity to smell ever comes up again - I think it was probably just sloppy writing. I wasn't paying much attention when I read that part and just assumed that part of the reason she passed out was that she was thinking about blood and needles too much (which always makes things worse).
And speaking of Bella having her period, I always wondered if stalker!Edward ever stole her tampons. (That would have been hilarious and gross, and I would have liked the books so much more)
I knew I was hoping for too much when I hoped there would be an interesting explanation that makes sense... And I think you're right, it was probably just sloppy writing.
That would have been hilarious and gross, and I would have liked the books so much more *lol* That was definitely a missed opportunity! Well, I think the easiest solution for writers of vampire fiction is to pretend that things like tampons don't exist. (Exception: Anne Rice...)
I dunno if you're interested in Twilight fanfiction, but I read one recently that was pretty good, and gives Edward a backstory that gives an explanation for his controling behavior / perfect facade. http://www.fanfiction.net/s/6717626/1/Secrets-of-the-Mind-Reader
(I don't actually search for Twilight fanfiction, but I'd heard this one mentioned on a writing forum, and it sounded interesting.)
I have read the first chapter, and I've got to say, I like Edward more in this version than in the actual book. I'm like you; I wouldn't search for Twilight fic, but I trust my friends' recommendations. :) Thanks!
