Over the weekend I shot a commemorative video for a couple and their respective families. It was a big affair, with over 20 people involved. One of the interview questions my team asked each family member was, "What does family mean to you?"
It got me thinking myself: To me, family is the people you have a shared history with, the people you turn to during crisis. It may not be to ask for help, but they're the people who will be there to offer a comforting shoulder.
I have to admit, I got a bit teary eyed during the interview.
My own family are pretty awesome: The Lee family (dad's side) is practical, stable and grown-up, while the Mendezes (mum's side) are colourful, charming and just a little bit off-kilter. My in-laws, the Thams are gentle and generally quite confused when I get it in my head that I need to lie on the floor and make strange noises at the cats.
Despite the cost of traveling, my dad made quite an effort to ensure we visited my mother's family whenever we could. And I'm quite happy that Wally and I are continuing the tradition. We decided that we'd try to visit my family in Mexico every two years when we could.
So far we've traveling to Mexico twice as a couple, once in 2005 and again in 2009. (
You can check out our 2005 Mexico/Japan video here.) This year we cut it a bit close, and were only able to confirm that we'd be able to go just a little over a month before the trip. But! We've bought our main tickets, and have plans to visit San Francisco (I've never been there), Mexico, Cuba and Seoul. We'll be away from Singapore for about a month and expect to be back mid January, sun-tanned, with loads of pictures and video, and somewhat broke.
I am less than 2 weeks from the travel date, and I have so much work to bulldoze through. Aaargh.
