Mr. D. Douglass, Building Manager II
Miami-Dade County, GSA
Hello Mr. Douglass,
Today at 14PM 2PM, when holding my camera with intention to take a picture of the Museum tower from the Southern verandah of Miami-Dade Library at Flagler Street, I was approached by security guard.
He stated that photography is prohibited in vicinity of Miami-Dade Library and unless I have a permit, I can not take any photographs.
I was surprised by this since I am taking photographs of Downtown Miami for many years now, and Miami-Dade Library and Miami Art Museum are two of the most photographed buildings not just by me, but by many tourists.
I asked the guard if I can take the photograph from the sidewalk down below and I had been answered:"No, it is prohibited".
Which is also a great surprise since sidewalk is a public place and not part of the Miami-Dade Library building; photographing in public places is one of the civil rights photographers can enjoy here in the United States.
The security guard gave me your name, that is why I am writing to you.
Could you please clarify the Miami-Dade County policies in regards to photography, specifically:
- is it ok to take photographs of Museum Tower from Southern verandah of Miami-Dade Library building without a permit?
- is it ok to take the photograph of Miami Art Museum from Eastern verandah of Miami-Dade Library building without a permit?
- is photography permitted on the sidewalks around Miami-Dade Library and Miami Art Museum buildings?
With Regards,
Emir Shabashvili
