My classmates felt the need to explain to me why a MtF transgender person (lovingly called 'tranny' by my classmates) isn't a woman. Because they can't have kids! Ovulate! Breast feed!two X chromosones.
About 3 sentences in it became clear that I was better of keeping my mouth shut. Upon later reflection, I realized that they sounded like a bunch of scared women, that somehow admitting there was more than one way to be a woman was somehow dangerous to them.
My favorite part:
Classmate: They can't be a woman because it's not in their genes, they don't have certains hormones and systems so they'll never experience some things a woman can experience!
Me: that's not what makes you a woman,
Classmate: Have you met any tranny's? (Her words)
Me: 3 or 4, yes.
Classmate: really?
me: yes.
Classmate: Then you know they're not really women (approximate, I may have blacked this part out)
me: *bites lip and does not say:* Wow, I'd like to see you say that to your transexual friend's faces.
*time passes, we talk about what might happen if we went on a day with a guy who turns out to have been a women*
me: Well I think telling me the truth should come some time before the engagement yes. But mostly because it's part of getting to know someone.
Classmate: Really, you'd still be able to marry, be in love with, a man who used to be a woman.
me: Yes.
Classmate: Okay I'm gonna give you props for sticking to your guns in the argument but I don't think you'd do it.
me: okay then. *doesn't say: I'm bisexual you phobic asshole, I wouldn't give a damn either way*
God it was such a horrible conversation. I'd appreciate suggestions for what to say for the future.
