Anyone surprised? Not Me.

L** Go**be*g finally posted on OTW and he does something that nearly every other person who has issues with fanfic does.

He says:

1. It ruins the artistic integrity of the work!!!!

And then when inevtiably asked about works such as 'Wicked' or authors like Tom Stoppard, he says:

2. Well no, if it's in the public domain, that's okay.

...??

Here's the thing, if it ruins the artistic integrity of the original (of which I call bullshit, but really, that's for people with bigger degrees than I) then it ruins the artistic integrity of the work. The end. No ifs, ands, or buts. You start giving exceptions to that and your argument is crap. You cannot say that artistic integrity is based on copyright because it's bloody not. Artistic integrity cannot be shut off or suddenly bolstered beyond the worries of derivative work the second an author dies or the copyright passes into the public domain and I don't understand anyone who doesn't make this connection. IF you're fine with ideas based on Shakespeare and fairy tales, if you do not see these as an affront to the original author, then give it the fuck up already and do not couch your argument in philosophical nigglings that are only true when using If/Then statements.

(Pee Ess. If critics and students etc can writer theories about Hamlet and his mom, why can't I write a quick 1000 word story about them?)
