Since 1994 we have had a place on Manitoulin Island, and have made countless trips up there. Almost all of them have been via the Bruce Peninsula and the ferry. It is almost exactly 300 km from London north to Tobermory, where we catch the Chi-Cheemaun ferry to the island, and then it is a bit less than an hours drive to our place on Ice Lake ( Read more... )

A couple of days ago, just after the sun set, we put the canoe in the lake, and soon after that we were out on the lake, the first time I have been in a canoe for almost two years. Two and a half years ago I started reading Joyce's Ulysses. I read a good part of it, but never did make it through the whole book. Now I have started reading it again. This fall I have been getting stronger and stronger. Still not back to 'normal', whatever that might be. But as an indication, we went to Toronto on Thursday, taking Cecilia back to Toronto, where we saw her new apartment, went for a walk with Bella (the dog), had lunch, and then went to the Art Gallery of Ontario to look at exhibitions of Jack ( Read more... )

 A couple of days ago we had about 20 cm of wet snow, and then we woke up this morning to another 40cm of fresh snow. Last week's metre of snow has compacted some, but still!  Down the street from us is this charming Ontario cottage. It looks especially charming bedraped with snow like this. Finally (or at least temporarily), the snow has stopped falling, and I was able to get out and take this photo this afternoon.

By now we have had almost a metre of snow in the past two days, and it is starting to look like it. Tomorrow almost everything is scheduled to be closed for the third consecutive day. The city buses ran today until 3 pm, but they will be off the street tomorrow to help the snow clearing equipment clean up, because off the major roads things are ( Read more... )

Today was the first of three days of the Manitoulin Art Tour. I managed to get the windows into the lake-side of the breezeway yesterday, but not the door, so the breezeway is still open to insects (and chipmunks!).
