hang on to the ones you love

one of the things that make me the happiest right now is hanging out with O, the oldest-of-old friends.

i grinned like a fool today when he texted me ("GD at 15.15?") as i was having my second cappuccino of the day, reading a book at the window. after our fall-out a year ago (a misunderstanding on both sides we were both too proud to solve) we've gotten back to the place where we were at 18. back then i'd text him saying "?" and he'd reply with a "!" and one of us would bike over.

we can sms each other first thing in the morning - well, afternoon - on a weekend and go hang out with no agenda whatsoever. we drink coffee, ride our bikes around the town, slouch in a cafe reading magazines. when we were 18 we'd watch skateboard movies and listen to new records and do nothing. it was excellent and it still is.

spending time with him is so free and easy. with girl friends the talk too often turns to relationships and what's wrong with them but with O we can talk about music and fixies and indie artists and food and who cares about boyfriends and girlfriends? i know if i needed to i could talk to him about mostly anything and he'd be a bit awkward but supportive and good, but i don't need to because he's my worry-free space.

he's a good person to have in my life. i hope he'll be around for another 24 years and then another still, and then hopefully more still.
