Thumbing through a recent issue of Glorian ruoka ja viini, I came across an article about Kenneth Oker-Blom, executive chef at the Knipan in Tammisaari. The man is 61 years old and has worked in kitchens, well, 4 years.
Reading that really took the pressure off me! I may have not ruined my life by finding food and wine only a few years ago, after all! I still have over 30 years to work on my cooking!
The man worked in high-level marketing jobs until he was 57, fitting in visits to two and three-star Michelin restaurants, meeting people in the trade, taking classes and adding to his library of cookbooks. After a heart attack he decided to focus on what matters - food. At 60 he applied for an internship in a two-star restaurant and now runs the kitchen at a successful summer restaurant. The man still dreams of interning at the Fat Duck.
I'm off to order more cookbooks. Kenneth says he has over 1000.
