well, basically. it's open-source, which if you aren't familiar with the term means that a whole bunch of volunteer developers contribute to coding it. i run a 95% or so open source system, with the rest of the stuff being free but closed source (like the drivers for my nvidia graphics card, a few games like enemy territory... etc). so now i can feel better about myself because now i'm doing everything that anyone who uses shitty M$ products can do, only i didn't pay for an operating system that's not worth paying for.
as to requiring some computer knowledge, many linux distributions (such as mandrake, SuSe, knoppix) are moving towards being easily set up by the non-computer-savvy. if you're interested you should try downloading a knoppix livecd (http://www.knopper.net/knoppix/index-en.html) and burning it, and then just try booting your computer with it. it will load an entire desktop system based on linux, with games, internet options, a free office suite, and more just from the cd without doing anything to your hard drive. if you have more questions let me know, as i'm sure you noticed i will be more than happy to tell you way more than you want. i'm all about spreading the free and open-source love :o)
and by "not worth paying for," i mean microsoft's bullshit isn't even worth stealing, which is what many people do. if you're going to download a CD iso off the internet to install an operating system with, why make it windows, the buggy piece of virus-ridden shit? make it awesome and make it linux.
see, i definitely should have gotten more than a 65 on that nerd quiz...
