Josh and I saw
Hard Candy last night. The movie poster was part of what lured me - little girl in a red hoodie standing in the middle of a steel bear trap. This movie has made my top ten favorite films of all times. Initially, I thought it’d only be as entertaining as the last few films to come from Lion’s Gate (well, we did enjoy The Descent...). But what a shocker. The script couldn’t have been better and the actors delivered it so well. Very simple - filmed in only a couple of locations - a coffee shop and a house and was completed in 17 days. According to imdb.com, the plot was inspired by stories of Japanese school girls ambushing sex predators that they meet online.
The subtle yet dramatic color changes in some of the scenes were mind warping; jumping from tense cool blues to mind-easing, soft warm glows. Some of the cinematography techniques succeeded in making me feel as if I was the one drugged and nauseated. Highly suspenseful. It was a psychological thriller more than anything. Torture, but nothing gory. The character of the 14 year old girl not only screwed around with the pedophile’s head, but the audience as well. You couldn’t predict what she was going to do next. She was brutal and extremely intelligent.
The lectures that the girl’s character gave likened to lectures that I’ve given sex offenders/child killers/pedophiles in my own head. The final scenes were extremely moving to me. I don’t think many people would get teary eyed at such a film, but my sockets were unmistakably moist. Very unprofessional of me to say, especially in regards to this film, but I have a soft spot for vigilante justice.
I’m buying this as soon as it’s released next month. September 19th, I believe.
Nice website: www.hardcandymovie.com. It also has a link for another site that I wasn’t aware of, www.wear-red.com, which pertains to internet violence (safety and prevention). Check it out.
