Memorial: Spirit Day
I am deeply saddened by the recent suicides of so many young people who have been pushed to choosing death over life because others made it so clear that living while being gay was a worse option. The below is something I think is tremendously valuable, perhaps necessary, reading, along with a link to the news article about the death of one of the boys.
From rm: Just because I didn't kill myself, doesn't mean I didn't feel like I was dying. Tyler Clementi killed himself after his roommate broadcast his private, intimate moments with another person of the same gender on the Internet. These things aren't pranks. They're violence. They're murder. They're hate. Even if the perpetrators are too fucking entertained by their own viciousness to know it.
There seems very little that can be done, but the below is a gesture:

It’s been decided. On October 20th, 2010, we will wear purple in honor of the 6 gay boys who committed suicide in recent weeks/months due to homophobic abuse in their homes at at their schools. Purple represents Spirit on the LGBTQ flag and that’s exactly what we’d like all of you to have with you: spirit. Please know that times will get better and that you will meet people who will love you and respect you for who you are, no matter your sexuality. Please wear purple on October 20th. Tell your friends, family, co-workers, neighbors and schools.
