Bones Timeline: Temperance Brennan

Mar 30, 2010 21:18

So...Bones has a notoriously dodgy internal timeline. I actually don't think it's all that bad, but then I'm good at fitting pieces together and I've been around fandom for a long time and have seen the truly egregious and unfixable (Chris Carter, I'm looking at you). I think I've managed to wank Brennan's personal history around most of the canon tidbits given out so that it can work. This is certainly not the only way to make it work, and to have it work this way requires a bit of squinting in a couple of places, but I think it can work so that it's not entirely out of the realm of believability.

DO please link and share this far and wide (with credit) if you wish.

I have approached canon taking everything that has been said as a GIVEN. Where it doesn't fit, I have tried to find an alternate explanation--a workaround such as a statement being an exaggeration, a lie, a statement that does not contain the entire explanation, etc.--rather than assuming that anything in canon is simply to be dismissed. So far (and that is important) I have not had to throw anything out due to its being utterly unworkable with a little wank on my part. That does not preclude this being necessary at some later date. These dates are approximate unless they are bold, in which case they have been stated in cannon or are easily calculated from dates that have been stated in canon (or actual history). My commentary is in italics.

Temperance Brennan's Life Timeline

1948-Matthew Brennan born and died (identity Max Keenan stole)

1971-Russell/Kyle born ("Woman in Limbo")

1976-Temperance/Joy born ("Woman in Limbo")

June 1978-Special Agent Gus Harper was murdered by FBI agent Robert Kirby on June 25. Just days later, Max and Ruth robbed the Ohio First Savings and Loan in Dayton, OH, and took the field notes and tapes and diary Gus had put there that showed that Marvin Beckett was innocent of what the FBI (including agents Kirby and Delaney, who worked with the task force in Cincinnati) was framing him for to cover for how they had been on the take from the bank robbery strong-arm gang (who worked OH, KY, and IA) with whom the Keenans had been working.

4 July 1978-Midwest strong arm gang did a job in Dayton that went really bad and two innocent bystanders were killed, along with one state trooper, and seven wounded. The Midwest strong arm crew had inks to white supremacists, real dedication to firearms and violence. ("Woman in Limbo"). They were not caught until one turned state's evidence a few years later and put the others in jail. By then the Keenans had gone underground.

1978-Max robbed a Piggly Wiggly in Carbondale IL and the clerk "conked him on the head with a baseball bat" ("Stargazer in a Puddle") Author's note: (my hometown, which, fwiw, never had a Piggly Wiggly; we had IGA and Kroger)

1978-After seeing McVicar at their house in Ohio (Russ saw him too and Max told him that if he ever saw the man again to grab his sister and hide. The Keenans went underground and changed names to Brennan ("Woman in Limbo")

1980-When Brennan was 4 and Russ was 9, Russ hid behind a door and jumped out at Tempe...and she hit him with her Chatty Cathy doll. ("Judas on a Pole")

by 1984-"Arthur McGregor" existed in Oregon with all kinds of identification including library card ("Judas on a Pole"); Max must have had multiple "outs"

1987-ish-Brennan attended and was an honor student at Woodside Elementary, a fact noted by her parents through a bumper sticker on their car (the identity of the school was scraped off when they ran) ("Woman in Limbo")

1987-Brennan won 1st place in the 7th grade school science fair at age 11, but lost the medal and the newspaper clipping with a photo of her and her mom ("The Finder").

Dec '91-After seeing Vince McVickar near their home, Max and Ruth Keenan go out Christmas shopping and leave their kids in Chicago. McVickar catches up with them (possibly in Champaign IL), and hits Ruth in the head with a bolt stunner. The blow is deflected and Max beats McVickar so that he needs 32 stitches in his forehead ("Woman in Limbo").

Jan '92-Russ Brennan leaves to "go out west and look for work" and Brennan is in the system ("Woman in Limbo")

Feb '93-Waco Siege at Branch Davidian Complex, Brennan says she did some work there ("Boy in a Bush"), I say she must have toured the ruins MUCH LATER and examined preserved remains at a MUCH LATER DATE (wank-wank-wank)

[beginning of my extrapolation, no longer canon, unless otherwise noted with bold or an episode reference]

Jan '92, second semester of that school year, Brennan accelerates her coursework (already advanced) to finish high school as quickly as possible to GET OUT. [I believe that just as Booth has exaggerated and spoken around certain things, Brennan lied about her "grandfather" getting her out of the system. I think she *was grandfathered* out of the system by aging out and just lies about it when she doesn't want to discuss it, especially since she says to Max "You and mom told us we didn't have grandparents." Her comment to Booth back when she didn't know him well seems more likely to be false than her question to her father where he answers it like it was a fact and gives her an answer that visibly surprises her.]

January or June '93-Brennan begins taking university classes early during high school, so that, by the time she graduates the following year, she will have a year of undergrad completed.

Late Fall 1993-Christine Brennan dies ("Woman in Limbo")

1993-1994-Attended Burtonsville High for her senior (and possibly previous years), where she was thought of as the one "who likes dead things" and was called "Morticia" by the other students. Her best friend was Ray Buxley, the janitor and groundskeeper, with whom she talked extensively about death as a natural process. She had Rebecca Conway as her chemistry lab partner (and considered her a "very sloppy lab partner"), was aware of the murder of Sarah Tidwiller, knew of a prank played on Julie Coyle, knew Brad Benson (the Prom King) and Carrie Turner, and broke the jaw of Evelyn Simms (Homecoming Queen and all-around popular girl) with a tennis racquet at a 90-degree angle accidentally because Evelyn was in the way when they were playing pairs ("Death of the Queen Bee"). Andy Pflueger had a crush on her, but also humiliated her by taping a Brainy Smurf to her locker instead of the Smurfette figure she wanted ("Boy in the Time Capsule").

June '94-Brennan graduates high school from Burtonsville High ("Death of the Queen Bee")

December '95-Bachelor's degree with Univ. semesters with partial loads: Su93, F93, S94, and FULL loads: SU93, SU94, F94, SP95, SU95, F95 (that encompasses 3 1/2 years of coursework)

1996-work in Rwanda(?) (Rwandan genocide was April-July 1994, with genocide trials inching forwards only at the end of 1996-the beginning of 1997, so she could have been there helping with prep work for trial) (dates unknown, mention of working in Rwanda and Iraq in "Critic in the Cabernet")

December '96-Master's (three semesters)

1996 or 1997-work in Serbia/Bosnia with massacre retrieval (the Srebrenica massacre was July '95 and mass graves continued to be discovered through 2006 and beyond)

1998-Brennan had sex for the first time at age 22 ("Man in the Mud"), possibly with Michael Stires. On a dig in Guatemala when surrounded by soldiers, when Dr. Stires said, "We do not flinch. We tell the truth." ("Girl in the Fridge")

December '98-Doctorate in six semesters (with summer semesters and all breaks doing field work), possibly hired to the Jeffersonian ABD. [I presume that she did all her class papers with an eye toward publication and submitted them for scholarly consideration so she would have a body of work for her resume and because, well, what is the point of writing a paper if the topic is not a worthy enough topic to write a paper on and then to share it with the scholarly community and the field?]

[back to canon]

Sept '98-Christine Brennan's remains were found at the edge of a cemetery in Salisbury, PA, so she "arrived at the Jeff around the same time as Brennan."

December 1998-Hired onto the Jeffersonian with her brand-spanking new Doctorate or ABD

Sept '01-Brennan did work at Ground Zero in NYC ("Man in the SUV"?)

Somewhere in here, finished another two doctorates presumably primarily through field work through her job at the museum, presumably publishing her findings in addition to writing dissertations on them. She was in Tibet running from the Chinese army, Sudan, Rwanda (if not earlier), Iraq (if not earlier), Guatemala and El Salvador (both of which she seems to have visited repeatedly), Serbia (if not earlier), possibly among other places.

2004-Was working as a lecturer (guest status?) at American University

2004-First case with Booth, met Angela at an art showing, got Angela to work at the Jeffersonian ("Sum of the Parts of the Whole")

ca 2004-2005-Worked on a dig at a mass grave in El Salvador, captured by a local soldier/officer who objected to the public knowledge getting out of the information she was discovering about the remains there. He put a bag over her head and threw her into a cell with a dirt floor, where she was held for three days (seemed longer) and made every day to believe she was going to die ("Woman in the Garden").

2005-Worked on a dig in Guatemala, worked with Booth on the Cleo Eller case, formed a partnership with the F.B.I. ("Pilot")

2006-Identified Christine Brennan's remains, reunited with Russ, who was living in Moorehead City, NC ("Woman in Limbo")

2006-Dates David (met in "Two Bodies in the Lab," seen in "Woman in Limbo") for a while, but that does not last (he is later referred to by Booth as a "cult recruiter" in "The Headless Witch in the Woods")

November 2006-Is kidnapped (with Hodgins) by the Gravedigger and buried alive ("Aliens in a Spaceship")

November 2006-Briefly dates a man who turns out to be his brother's murderer ("The Headless Witch in the Woods")

December 2006-Is reunited with her father when he returns, disguised as a priest, to warn her off trying to find him. He leaves her handcuffed to a park bench

May 2007-Receives from her father a video tape her mother had made on her 16th birthday in 1992 along with a ring that was passed from mother to daughter

2008-Testifies at Max Keenan's trial for the murder of Director Kirby. ("Verdict in the Story")

Spring 2008-Realized that Zack had been working for Gormagon. Zack was placed in an institution for the criminally insane after destroying his hands to save Hodgins ("The Pain in the Heart")

Fall 2008-Booth admits to Brennan for the first time that, "My dad drank." ("Con Man in the Meth Lab")

Feb 2009-Rescued Booth from a ship rigged to explode, where he'd been put by the Gravedigger. ("Hero in the Hold")

April 2009-After seeing the scars on Sweets' back from childhood whippings, and upon urging from Gordon Gordon, Brennan revealed to Booth and Sweets that she'd been locked in a car trunk by one set of foster parents. ("Mayhem on a Cross")

Spring 2009-Recognized that Booth's odd comments and behavior were due to a brain tumor. On his request, remained in the O.R. while the tumor was removed, and while Booth coded. Refused to leave the hospital the entire time he was comatose due to a reaction to the anesthesia, and wrote a novel about them, married, and expecting a child together in another life, a book she read aloud to Booth while he was comatose. ("Critic in the Cabernet," "The End in the Beginning," "Harbingers in the Fountain")

Summer 2009-Booth awoke not recognizing Brennan and having some memory problems. Brennan panicked and ran to Guatemala where she participated in a dig during Booth's recovery. ("Harbingers in the Fountain")

Fall 2009-Met Booth's grandfather for the first time. ("Foot in the Foreclosure")

December 2009-Brennan meets Margaret, the first member of her extended family she has encountered. Margaret is obsessed with Benjamin Franklin, didactic, precise, dislikes children, and regularly offers unsolicited advice...and Brennan thinks they're nothing alike. "Harbingers in the Fountain")

Christmas 2009-Brennan insists on attending the burial of a victim, whose mother is burying him alone on Christmas. Just days before, Max had told Brennan that "being alone on Christmas means nobody loves you," and Brennan cancels her plans to go to El Salvador for a dig in favor of staying home and hosting an orphan Christmas. "Harbingers in the Fountain")

Spring 2010-On Sweets' urging, Booth tells Brennan he wants to "give this a chance," and she flees. ("Parts in the Sum of the Whole")

April 2010-Brennan attends the 20th anniversary of her high school graduation, where it is very clear how little liked she was and how much she stood out as different. ("Death of the Queen Bee")

Spring 2010-Brennan departed DC to participate in a dig in Maluku, Malaysia. Booth returned to service to the Army on something between active duty (with a promotion to Sergeant Major) and civilian consultant in a training capacity. They determined to meet "a year from today, by the coffee cart." ("Beginning in the End")

Fall 2010-Was called back after 7 months, feeling clearer about trying romance with Booth, only to find he'd met and begun dating Hannah Burley, a war correspondent, who came to be with him in DC. ("Mastodon in the Museum")

February 2011-Burned papers with Booth, with dates written on them for when they thought they might be ready to try a relationship. ("The Blackout in the Blizzard")

July 2011-After Broadsky shoots Vincent Nigel-Murray, Booth and Brennan consummate their relationship when she stays over at his place. Brennan becomes pregnant, and over the next months, they reveal their new relationship status to their friends. ("The Change in the Game")

late November/early December 2011-Booth's father dies, having named Booth executor ("Male in the Mail"). Booth is barely able to be civil, let alone to sympathize with Hank, leading Hank to chasten him for not understanding that Hank was grieving his own son.

January 2012-Booth and Brennan, who have been living half and half in each other's homes, finally find a "Mighty Hut" they can renovate and share together.

April 2012-Booth and Brennan's daughter, Christine Angela, is born in the stables of a bed and breakfast on their way home from part of an investigation. Booth delivers his daughter.

Summer 2013-After being framed for murder by Pelant, Brennan flees with her father and Christine, going on the run without telling Booth immediately following Christine's christening. ("The Past in the Present")

Spring 2013-Marianne Booth returns to DC to see Booth and ask him to give her away at her wedding ("Party in the Pants"). Brennan encourages a reluctant Booth to go ahead.

General note: Christine, Russ, and Temperance Brennan all have Type O blood. ("Judas on a Pole")

Anyone have any bits to add? Any guesses? Is there anything similar for Booth? I've done a similar one for Booth.
