Well,
iingaartist,
mtgat and I finally watched our way through the rest of Torchwood last night and today.
I thought "Everything Changes" was okay (with problems and reservations). "Day One" was okay, decent setup, etc. "Small Worlds" was suitably creepy and, in spite of lots of the dumb, there were things I enjoyed about "Greeks Bearing Gifts." Finally, FINALLY, eight eps in and there was "They Keep Killing Suzie" which I thought was actually a strong ep that had a BEGINNING and a middle AND an end ALL in the same ep, interesting character stuff, good humor, good makeup, good concept. Then there were the next three, which I found mostly appallingly...lacking...or that would START well and SEEM to be holding it together (along with my interest) only to fall utterly apart at the end. As I'd heard from others, I found the last two eps of the season to be the strongest and actually enjoyed them...well, mostly, I can't say how much I DON'T CARE about Rapist-Owen's Man-Pain (as I've seen SOMEONE call it).
iingaartist saw a comment the other day where someone summed up TW by saying, "It's like Men in Black meets Angel only everyone's bisexual and wildly incompetent." I mean...exactly HOW OFTEN can Evil Lovers be smuggled into the secret base before we just roll our eyes (oh, yeah, for me that started with #2...) And EVERYONE on the show is just...unlikeable or flawed almost or totally beyond redemption...and I rarely use the term "morally bankrupt" but the absence of ethics is becoming a deal-breaker for me. I keep WANTING to like it, wanting to like characters, wanting to sympathize with them, but Owen gets NO quarter from me (I hate him unrelentingly both because he's an ass and because he's a rapist--and the show thought that was a funny gag?????). I don't mind the swearing. I don't mind the gore (though some of the spurting seems unnecessary and, dood, when you write literally in blood? Sixty years later the writing will be BROWN, not RED...). The violence (especially main-character-on-main-character violence) is just, for me, unnecessarily over the top (not always, but often enough). The sex and nudity...definitely over the top and gratuitous much of the time and not needed as a CONSTANT intrusion (and does ANYONE have ANY concerns about STDs or pregnancy???) in practically every episode.
*sigh*
I am all caught up on DW and liked SO much about the season and the final episode of the season...but there were rather too many bits where I was laughing out loud when I know it was supposed to be dramatic and serious and instead I was giggling at the cheese. I WAS pleased to see that I'd speculated correctly on a couple of things (I'm not usually so good at that). Overall, for me, the good outweighed the lame and the end of the ep left me on a good note rather than with the snickering, so I am a Happy Fan, in no small part because I LOVE the show in a way that, oddly for me, means that almost anything they do still makes me happy and warm and fuzzy in side. I'm fascinated by the degree to which I'm highly forgiving of nearly anything because it's my SHOW and I'm Having Fun--that's NOT my normal stance as a fan or a person as I'm usually highly critical and analytical.
I wonder if there will be a nod in SJA to Sarah's perspective on the bits of events that remain in the timeline at the end of the season of DW. I love, beyond the telling of it, the fact that TW3 got sent to the Himalayas. I want to SEE that fic--four skinny-ass citified Brits, two Welsh, two English, wandering the Himalayas and FREEZING--with Owen demanding that they give up and leave and the others insisting that they just haven't found the right thing yet and it could be important.... Yeah...the various versions of that will be fun.
And, in September, they're going to start showing Sarah Jane Adventures and my JOY will be complete.
ETA: DEFINITELY spoilers in comments.
