I have been so lucky this year...stories for me, comments for things I've written, storiesf or others that could have been written for me because I love them so and they're exactly what I'd have asked for were they to have been mine.
So...more stuff...and some repeats with specifics this time, and stuff I've not yet listed farther down.
Forever Knight
I can't help but saying again...go read this gorgeous Natalie story; it's post LK but not dismal and depressing. Just the right level of melancholy, good characterization, believable development of the characters from the ten-odd years ago.
"Afterimage" Snakes and Ladders
And, for those of you watched Snakes and Ladders either for Cath Disher or for itself, there are two lovely stories, one is mine from last year, one is this year's story for the writer of mine from last year: from last year--
"All the Running You Can Do" and for my writer from last year--
"Cause and Effect" Early Edition
Very fun story, all about Gary's frustration, Marissa being left out, and The Cat. Reads like an episode and totally worth it:
"Days Like This" Nancy Drew
Lovely little bit set in the later stories where everyone's in college. The summary of "Bess and the sidekick blues" is apt and the story, as one comment said, looks at the realities of the situation in a way that the series never did:
"Worth a Try" New Stuff
Fried Green Tomatoes
This is a gorgeous bit between Ruth and Idgie that is essentially a missing scene from the movie and is just perfect:
"Wild Honey" 1776
This is gorgeous little character analysis of John Adams as he contemplates the task of convincing the Congress of his goals for independence. Excellent details, excellent characterization, gorgeous language:
"Mirror" Deep Impact
This is from last year's New Year's Resolutions, but it's still GORGEOUS, set after the movie and clever and bittersweet and hopeful and just excellent:
"Souvenir (Just to Prove the World Was Here)" Eureka
I have never seen this show (other than like most of one episode), but this is Just Plain Fun and totally worth reading for the fun story dice aspects. Even if you don't know who anyone is...it's just FUN and clever and the language and names of the projects are just a delight:
"Five, er, Six Reports Nathan Stark Wishes Never Crossed His Desk" Murphy Brown
Fantastic pre-series Murphy...knife's-edge tense, interactiosn with all the characters that are spot on each time, gorgeous description of Murphy's mental image of a young Jim Dial...so worth it and painful and poignant and just GOOD--and I like my sense that through the whole story, even Murphy may not really be sure which plane she's going to get onto once she leaves the office:
"but liquor is quicker" Narnia
Fantastic piece of the children after LWW, growing up a second time, contemplating memory and loss of memory, all grieving and unable to talk to one another for fear of making things worse for the other since they all grieve and feel differently. The tension of that is brilliantly done:
"Lives By Breaking" Nice Jewel and Tirian piece, with memories and bits with SO many of the characters and such a glorious description of New Narnia:
"Further Up and Further In" Lovely bit from New Years Resolution 2006 about the kids after returning from Narnia, really excellent discussions between each set of the kids, nice stuff with the Professor, seeds of everyone's futures sown gently along the way. Totally worth it:
"Knock on All Doors and Enter Nowhere" ETA: I knew I'd forget one!
Hunt for Red October
Fantastic Vasily (Sam Neill's character)-centric piece that centers around the wonderful, "Do you think they will let me live in Montana?" scene and the utter faith in and commitment to Ramius that Vasily has. It's beautiful writing and totally worth a read, even if it's been a long time since you've seen the film. If you've never seen the film but remember growing up reading about Soviet Russia...still might be worth it. The shift from hierarchy to equals between the characters in the story is also excellent:
"Vera"
