Vienna coffee bar

I've given my card to about 10 different people that I've met during my trip, and noone has gotten in touch yet. I got a card from one american that I shared a train with and ended up emailing him to meet up but it didn't work out.

I'm trying to maintain eye-contact with people I pass on the street, since my natural reaction is to look down. Jason and I talked about it at a bar in NYC before I left and he told me that keeping eye contact usually results in a smile rather than people getting creeped out. I worry alot about being creepy, even though I am a prtty nice and non-creepy dude. I think it has to do with being on the higher end of the age-scale for hostelers.

last night I hung out with an English kid from Stafford. He was 18. We got some beers and walked around Vienna at night talking about politics and world events. He talked about how he got frustrated with his mates back home who he couldn't have intelectual dialogue with but he was looking forward to college since he imagined it'd be better. He had met some Norweigian girls on the train and had come to the Hostel with them but the girls ended up spending all of their time shopping and didn't end up hanging out with him nearly at all.

Travelling can be a lonely business, since any friends you meet end up heading somewhere else the next day, but it's also pretty interesting to strike up conversations, something I don't do a lot of back home.

I have found myself saying I am from New York instead of DC, and some of that is for cool-points and some of that is to avoid having a political discussion, but I guess that's better than saying I'm from Canada. At least i stayed in NYC or 2 months before I started travelling and will end up there when I get back.

Tonight I go to Rome. Should be good.
