Shotaro is like... something special for Delaine. He sees him as a rival because Shotaro is rather smart (and deep down, he believes him to be smarter than he is, actually), and enjoy confrontation with him.
He wants to prove himself better, but in a healthier way than with Fai (whom he absolutely hates), and the competiont with him motivates him in keep working hard.
On the other hand, Delaine also sees Shotaro as a precious friend that he seriously treasure. He wouldn't ever admit it, not to Shotaro, but he deeply cares for him and if something were to happen to me (again) that would devastate him. There's a good possibility that if someone ever hurt Shotaro, he would try to go Rambo on them.
When he was Apathy Syndrome'd, for the first time in a long, long while, Delaine kept having hopes for the future and wished for his recovery. Most probably he went to visit him every single day.
Especially after Wednesday died, he feels closer to him because he knows that Shotaro also had a big trauma from the event.
In the end, there are things he doesn't like about Shotaro, but no matter how he fight with him over silly things, he really do care for him.
