[ Personality ] :
... There was a time when this area wouldn't have had much in it. When Naoki was just an average student, who fell asleep in class, read too many occult magazines, played too many video games, and hung out with his friends, Isamu--a fashionable ladies man who had an eye on their teacher, and Chiaki, a polite and careful girl who was raised with a rich family, and had a love of things she considered 'pretty' (of which the occult was not included, which was one of his hobbies). When the sun went down, he went to sleep, bored but happy. But the sun always came up, his friends always called him, and life went on in Tokyo for an average high school boy.
That, unfortunately, all changed.
After Naoki was invited to the Shinjuku Hygenic Hospital by his teacher, Yuko Takao, events befell him that most 'average' students would never believe. What he hadn't--couldn't--have known was that destiny had decided that he would be the one who would be there to witness the end of the world, and then its rebirth, to decide on what the new world would be. He watched from the hospital as the entire world ended... and he could do nothing about it. This had a profound effect on the once very cheerful boy who, despite sometimes napping in class, was hoping to do something with his life, and was generally fairly happy and rather optimistic. Unfortunately, as he found out, being an optimist almost never pays when it comes to reality; especially the new one he would find himself in.
When he awoke after the world had ended, his trials did not stop, and things would only continue to go downhill afterwards. ... You think the world ending and all of humanity ceasing to be with it was horrific to live through, let alone watch? Well, then you've not even seen half of what Naoki has been through. You see, Lucifer--yes, that very same Fallen Angel--had chosen him to become his dark savior of sorts. Perhaps feeling pity for the weak human who had lived through the end of the world, or perhaps scheming to create a black messiah who would end this constant creation, destruction, and recreation, Lucifer imparted to Naoki a gift he never wanted: the essence of demonic power, otherwise known as Magatama. Magatama are brain parasites, essentially, that give their host the powers and body of a demon. Entering originally through either the eye or the mouth (it is not made exactly clear), the original Magatama burrows into the body, finding its way to the brain and reworking everything. After that, others may be ingested to change powers. However, going through this requires the host to... be awake. It was dropped on him by Lucifer, in the form of a small, blond-haired child, and essentially he lived through unspeakable agony for several minutes, passing out afterwards, not to see his transformation. When he awoke... he was a demon. The trauma left Naoki... a much more quiet teenager than he used to be.
Very, VERY quiet. Once compassionate, perhaps a bit silly, overly trusting and naive but freely speaking, he became introverted, quiet, worried, and paranoid. Constantly being under threat of being killed by demons--or your once 'best friends' will do that to you. He didn't ask to be a demon, or anything else--he simply wanted to be with his friends, his teacher. Have a normal life.
He lost that.
That's the thing about him--Naoki has lost everything, and despite it all... somehow, he's kept going. Because, you see, despite the world doing it's best to beat it out of him, that optimism has remained. He is still just as hopeful, naive, and overly trusting as he was before, if a tad bit wiser then he used to be about most things. He still smiles, he still laughs, and he still manages a sense of humor, however hard it may be to do so in this desolate wasteland where every human is dead, his friends have become monsters, and everything is out to kill him.
Over time, Naoki met the demons he came to call friends, and realized most of them weren't so bad. This helped pull him out of his shell again. He became accustomed to living as a demon, doing strange things like eating parasites and energy and not regular food, and talking to and using demons as allies. He also got used to being hunted by pretty much everything and everyone, simply for being chosen as what he is: the one who will recreate the world. Though, he doesn't really want to recreate it--he just wants to puts things back to how they were. To have his mother, his father, and his two best friends around. To go out for ice cream with them after school, to study for boring tests, to put in too much effort in track and field... all of the things he used to consider mundane are now near and dear to his heart.
Because he's been living in a literal wasteland inhabited by souls of the deceased and demons for weeks and weeks now, perhaps even months. There is no sun, no moon; only the light of Kagutsuchi to guide him. Naoki... isn't exactly okay with this. But he's accepted it. At first, he was confused and angry, and very quiet, but now he is accepting and understanding, and if asked to jump, will simply say "how high?" instead of wondering why he has to; he's stopped questioning things by now, simply because if he constantly did, well... he'd never get anywhere. Although part of him is the ever-curious child, wanting to know how things work, he'll generally try not to think too deep about things, mostly because that is what the Vortex world's rules taught him.
He has literally been to the depths of hell and back, and as a result, a lot of things to him... well, he's used to weird, strange, inhuman monstrosities, along with odd things. If it's normal, mundane, and human, then it now fascinates him--he doesn't know what it's like anymore to just eat regular food, say. He doesn't know what it's like to not be running for your life or defending yourself constantly. And he doesn't know what it's like to even be able to bathe and wear normal clothes, because in his world... none of that is possible, or even needed.
Demons don't need to do any of that.
... But he wants to, you see. He wants it all back. He wants to just go out for ice cream, take a shower, and go play video games. He hasn't seen anything like that for... well, he can't even tell how long it's been, but it HAS been long. He hasn't even seen human life lately. So getting back to what I said earlier, this makes him... well, even MORE naive and trusting than usual, in a sense. Are you human? Then he's fine with you as long as you're nice to him and don't scream or try to kill him. ... Though he is deathly afraid of being feared and hated, and as a result is somewhat shy, he does love to be social and make friends. Especially with people (or demons).
He has something of a hero complex, being the chosen one and all that. Is your kitten in a tree? HE WILL GET IT. Did your kerchief blow away? He'll retrieve it! Did you fail math? Let him tutor you! And so on. In fact, he's overly willing to help anyone as long as he can, and if he can't, he WILL look for some way he can, even if indirectly, help you out. That's how he is--he's trusting, kind, and overly nice to a fault. Sure, he might be literally THE strongest being in his world now, but... he's still just a genuinely nice kid who can be a bit of an idiot at times when it comes to simple things. ... It's just that most of these mundane, simple things that would be considered average to us no longer apply to him, as he's had to discard those rules and entirely restart, learning new ones. The first is this: survival of the fittest.
... Even then, he tried his best to help everything and everyone he came across. When Hijiri died in front of him, killed by his once best friend for his energy, he was crushed because he couldn't save him, even though he had gone crazy not moments earlier. Because that is just how Naoki is: forgive and forget. He allows Dante into his team, hiring him despite the fact not long ago he'd tried to kill him... well, a lot of times. And even then, since Dante seemed like a nice guy and was a human, despite being a demon hunter, he figured the ironic part of a demon hiring a demon slayer would... be amusing, even if no one else cared. And so he did just that. Speaking of senses of humor, his is fairly good-natured, though at times he can be rather sarcastic, deadpan, and snarky. This is mostly due to all he's seen; it's jaded him quite a bit to go through what he has, and his sense of humor can even get a bit dark. He'll laugh if he's covered in blood and nearly dying, for example, because it amuses him.
On the opposite end of the spectrum, Naoki is usually fairly easygoing and accepts most things readily with a quiet expression, but if angered, you'd better watch out. Hell hath no fury (literally) like a demon scorned, and Naoki doesn't like being betrayed or used. And he's been through... well, BOTH lately, and it hasn't sat well with him. Mostly, he simply is a good guy who only wants to be able to relax and be at peace; be friends with everyone, not fight, and maybe be with his parents again. And to rest, perhaps, simply put. Not be the chosen one; not to have this power. To just... be with his family again, to be cared for, and to have friends who he will not have to fear turning into horrible monsters unable to see how truly ironic and terrible the prices they've paid for their humanity are. ... But he can't do any of that, can he? No; for now, he cannot rest until he has restored his world to the normal way it used to be.
Since he's seen the darker sides of people so often--simply for an ideal he has deemed "not worth it," he generally tends to worry about people in certain situations, and thus always pokes his nose in to change things if he can. If he can stop someone from becoming like his friends, he will do so. He'd prefer to see no one have to die, ever again. That quality is part of why he is the hero he is: he will restlessly, fearlessly, and exhaustively go to any length to help someone, even if he BARELY knows them, so long as they are innocent and deserve a second chance. If you are in his good books, you have a friend, protector, and caring soul who will guard you for life. If you are deemed bad by him... you have an enemy who may just kill you without even breaking a sweat, walking away from your body without even blinking.
Naoki is every extreme, taken to the obvious conclusion. He is the very essence of a 'dark' hero, but he is still very much also a teenage boy who would like to call you his friend and cast all of that aside. There should be no reason to kill you (and he can, effortlessly, at this point, for he has been working and training as a demon for so long it is second nature to do so), not when you can just apologize, forgive, and forget, right? ... Right?
[ Strengths/Weaknesses ] :
Ah, this is quite complicated. Naoki--otherwise known as the Hitoshura, or Demi-fiend, is a demon. He is no longer a human. But he has a human heart. So! I will break this down into more simple, manageable areas.
Strengths
Physically:
- He can run, jump, crouch, punch, kick, hit... all of it double the strength of a normal human, and he can do all of this for twice as long, so his endurance is top-notch.
- He doesn't need food or water like a human (though he still feels hunger and thirst, he won't get sick from not eating or drinking.
- His eyesight, hearing, and other senses are usually twice as good as most human's. For example, he can hear your heartbeat.
- He can sense non-human things, such as the flow of energy, other living beings, and alignment, race, etc. when it comes to demons.
- He can't really die very easily, and he'll never die from sickness. In fact, I don't think he can even really GET sick, or catch a disease.
- He heals quickly.
- He can null or void most magic, and use almost all magic. His spells are EXTREMELY powerful, and he knows many nigh-unblockable, Almighty-based attacks that hit hard and fast. EYE LAZERS
- There is actually nothing that can catch him off-guard when it comes to battle. Self-taught he may be, but he is PREPARED as all hell.
- On that note: he is entirely self-sufficient in spellcasting, healing, attacking, powering up, and so on.
- If he dies, he can hang on for longer than normal, because of a skill called Endure.
Emotionally:
- He's pretty tolerant, and hard to rile up, scare, or rattle. Heck, he hasn't even cried in... a long time.
- He's ridiculously strong--even when his friends die or become monsters and he isn't sure of himself, he keeps moving forward.
- He isn't easily swayed.
- He makes friends easily, and has a lot of demon allies (though, I doubt this applies to Vat).
Weaknesses
Physically:
- Because of his strength, if he was taken from it or someone was immune to anything he could do--magic, physical stuff--he probably would be easily caught off-guard.
- ... If his powers or Magatama were ever taken away, he'd be very vulnerable to EVERYTHING.
- He will be caught off-guard by... real weapons, sometimes.
- ... When near death or in any sort of danger, the veins on his body that glow green will turn red, which alerts anyone nearby to his current condition as well.
- He doesn't... really protect himself well and is open to counterattack.
- Long-range weapons damage him very easily, as he has no guard and has trouble avoiding them.
- He is still humanoid in nature and easy to stab or pierce, and WILL bleed.
- He relies far too much on magic, his demons, and his Magatama to help him.
- He tends not to use items unless necessary and doesn't carry much with him (how could he, anyway?).
- His horn is actually really sensitive; it's how he senses things and takes in energy and stuff, so touching it will kind of make him spazz. ... A lot. And also annoy him.
Emotionally:
- Where his true weaknesses lie. He doesn't plan ahead well; he will generally run into battle with only a single check of himself and his allies.
- He isn't great with change; it's difficult for him. He can adapt easily, but emotionally it takes a huge toll on him if anything changes too much.
- He is too naive and trusting of people. If you apologize, he WILL accept it and even allow you into his close-knit party. ... Yeah. In the same vein, even though he IS paranoid, he really fails to question some basic things, and he is said to be far too naive, caring, and trusting of people.
- ... Especially HUMANS, who he hasn't seen a lot of!
- His memory isn't too good long-term, particularly over weeks or months, because he has spent so much time memorizing short term things, such as demon skills and such.
- Foreign things are totally new to him, as is anything human. He will be caught off-guard by it.
- He is kind of... a bit of a derp and tends to not consider the usual, average thing. He expects anything BUT the average.
- He is easily caught off-guard, even though he is always ready for a fight.
- He is easily bought by anything mundane because of nostalgia or it not existing in his world any longer.
- He's generally always in a rush.
- He has a bit of a hero complex and will save anyone and everyone.
- ... He has a weakness for anything remotely cute and/or innocent looking.
- Although he's somewhat skeptical of things, he will accept kindness at it's face value.
- ... He is really just a lonely average teenager at heart who is confused and misses his family and friends and old life and being human, so he's easy to manipulate.
[ Other Important Facts ] :
Those tattoos aren't tattoos; they're just demon markings! He also glows in the dark, loves video games and the occult (despite now being part of the occult), he has an over fondness for human food and drink, especially sweet things.
... All he wears are shorts and a pair of sneakers, which are really old and worn. Yes, that is a horn on his neck. Oh, and his eyes used to be blue but have turned yellow because of his becoming more reliant on the demon in him. His yellow eyes also glow in the dark.
Oh, and he can apparently understand any kind of non-human language and is personally now marked as a sinner, or something. He kind of killed Metatron actually. Oops.
He is from April, 2004, so anything newer then that date is totally awesome and unknown to him, by the way.
[ Sample ] :
[ ... He really hadn't been expecting this. He expected a lot of things, but probably not waking up like this. He was wet, and he was cold, and his demon friends were all gone. So was Dante and his usual witty, sarcastic but amusing snarky ways. A silent moment passes as he find a towel offered by a local, and is rather... surprised when he is approached.
The first thing out of his mouth (yes he can do more then stare blankly) takes the person a little off-guard. ]
... You're human, aren't you? You're not dead?
[ That... is amazing. And wonderful. Imagine that--people, ALIVE? Everything else could wait, there was actual living humanity here. And he hadn't had a decent shower in a long, long time. The first order of business as soon as he found his friends would be showing them what other humans were like, then a hot shower and food. Real food. The people were nice enough, and they weren't scared, so all the better if he could... get something without paying. But he could if he had to. ... If they took demon currency, anyway.
Though he is worried about his partners, particularly his Pixie, they're all very strong and can take care of themselves. This he knows. But he prefers to be around to direct them if they came with him. Naoki supposes the first means would be asking around. "Hey, have you seen anyone wearing red, who has white hair? Tall and snarky guy, has dual guns, really cocky?" Dante would probably be able to explain this to him. Maybe. If he felt like. That guy could be such a jerk. But he was still his friend, and his friends took concern and priority, because if anything, he took care of his own, especially other Fiends. ]
[ Questions? Comments? Concerns? ] : Nope! Not really. I don't plan on taking any of his demons or his party with him and I know he won't be able to summon them anyway, so it's no big deal. If you need, I can nerf his powers, but he's generally a nice guy, so I doubt he'd attack anyone without permission or anything. \o/
