The Weekend Update

Sep 26, 2006 19:58

A couple of days late...I had this almost ALL typed out last night on Graham's laptop and then, I hit a button and it all disappeared.  So...the probably abbreviated version:

Friday I worked and met Graham for Mexican.  We were talking over the plans for the weekend and realized that we'd have to leave Birmingham VERY early on Saturday to get to Knoxville in time for everything that we wanted to do, and he suggested that we drive up that night.  Once I realized that he was serious and we confirmed a 2nd night at the hotel, I raced home to pack up and off we went.  Of course, what sounded like a great idea at 8:00 wasn't so hot at 2:00 AM...we got to the hotel at around 3:30.

It started sprinkling on us about an hour outside of Knoxville, and it rained all night long.  And all morning long.  And during the drive to campus.  It slowed up long enough for us to walk over to Calhoun's but it started again while we were waiting for a table.  Lunch was SO good and it turned out that our server was a DG at UT-- she's a junior.  I had on my anorak with my letters on it and she noticed and said something to me...we chatted about the differences between our chapter here at UAB and theirs for awhile and then it was time to head out.  It rained while we walked to the stadium but stopped long enough for the band to march in-- we heard them playing when we were picking up our tickets at will-call and RACED around the stadium so that I could see them.  They were all marching-- even the woodwinds-- and we heard them do Rocky Top about a million times...it was really cool to see because, being Homecoming weekend, there were alot of alumni there singing and cheering and people were standing on the walkways up to the stadium watching.  It was fun.

The weather turned south on us again while we walked over to the bookstore and back-- by the time we got into the stadium, it was storming pretty badly.  The game ended up being delayed for an hour but they did finally play ball...I was a little disappointed that I didn't get to see the team run through the big "T" onto the field, but there's always next time, right?  UT scored 2 right off the bat, and that pretty much set the tone for the game.  A couple of hours, and several gallons of rainwater later, the game was over, UT won, and we had a long, wet walk back to the car.  We had intended to hit the strip afterwards for dinner, but once we were warm and dry again we elected to order pizza and stay out of the weather instead.

Sunday morning we checked out of the hotel and headed to Waffle House for breakfast.  While we were driving home we were talking about Chattanooga and we decided to hit the aquarium on the way home.  It was FABULOUS!  Yes, yes, yes I hear that the one in Atlanta/Gatlinburg/New Orleans is better, but I haven't been there so this was great!

All in all, it was a wonderful weekend and a fun little getaway...a "Pre-Festival of Mere" celebration.   And now, I'm two days into my last week at the bakery. :)

Off to see the epiosde of SATC where Carrie cheats on Aiden with Big!
