Darla hasn't the faintest idea why she believes that she can "save" Harry - nor is she clear as to why she wants to. She's never been anybody's angel. In giving life to Connor she doomed him to a life spent without that which is most valuable to a child - his mother. She spent years watching over her boy as he grew strong and powerful in Quor'toth and she ached over it, knowing that while the hell demension might well be the better for his presence her miracle child deserved better. Had she the ability to trade places with him she would have in an instant, but pleas to the powers went unheeded.
Everyone is where they are meant to be. His soul cries not, for it knows not what it lacks. Everything will come full circle, Darla, and soon you will understand.
But she still doesn't understand. Because though it's true that Connor's returned to Los Angeles, where he is meant to be, and he is quite as happy as a prophecy child can be expected to be (under the circumstances) Darla still seems to be missing the point. She's back, and Connor's here, and he has two parents.
They'll never quite be the happy family, though, will they? That's part of the problem. Angelus will always be, well, Angel, and Connor grew up far too quickly. Darla, for her part, no longer wants any part of the boy she sired so long ago.
No, it's his discards she's interested in, and she can't fathom why. Perhaps it's because he's so similar to her own progeny - lacking a mother, abandoned by a father (and everybody else he'd ever cared about). And so Aurelian she can't help but feel a little bit proud.
Perhaps that's why saving him has become so important to her. She can't stand to see her family members fail, though stumbling, well. Who doesn't falter from time to time? She's not his angel, but perhaps that's her greatest virtue. Darla will help Harry, she will catch him before he falls -
But Connor comes first. Connor always comes first.
After twenty-one years, he has a mother.
