2010 in Fandom Meme

Dec 20, 2010 21:57

Am all moved in at my parents' for a couple of weeks. They and my brother greeted me in typical fashion, with a whole bunch of eye-rollingly pathetic drama. So, to distract myself from that, and from the fact that I have a cold (which will hopefully, hopefully be gone by Christmas or else I'll stab something dammit), I'm doing a meme.

Swiped from ivanolix and cujoy.

Your main fandom of the year?
Battlestar Galactica. It pretty much fully took over from Star Wars this year - you can thank (or blame, if you're one of my poor Star Wars readers) a little fic project called Insanity Underrated for that. ;)

Your favorite film watched this year?
I drew a blank for the longest time on this one, which is rather pathetic. I really don't get to enough movies anymore. >.> I liked Inception, but didn't find it mindbendingly OMG!AMAZING!WOW like some folks did. (Not knocking people who had that reaction, by the way - yay for you if you did! I just ... didn't. Heh.) So I'll go with In the Valley of Elah, a TERRIFIC film about the Iraq war and PTSD that I watched in March - I think - and that absolutely blew me away. Wow. WOW. And of course the honourable mention is Avatar. Say what you want about it, but I mostly watched for Sigourney Weaver, and was in no way disappointed. :D

Your favorite book read this year?
No contest here: The Emperor of All Maladies, by Siddhartha Mukherjee. It's a biography of cancer, and SO amazingly well-written.

Your favourite album or song to listen to this year?
Er. Another tough question, because my music tastes are eclectic at the best of times and the songs I listen to most often tend to be in concert with whatever fic I happen to be working on. Right now I'm obsessed with "Miracle" by the Foo Fighters, "Brighter Than Sunshine" by Aqualung and "God Is A DJ" by Pink. For a very specific, very fic-related reason. XD

Your favourite TV show of the year?
Tie between The Walking Dead and Boardwalk Empire. My Sunday nights were so damn much fun when both of those were on. *g*

Your favourite LJ community of the year?
ontdcreepy. I need my horror/zombie/freaky stories fix and that community brings it, in a big way.

Your best new fandom discovery of the year?
Dexter. Please note that, as with fully 95% of my fandoms, I did not actually intend to get sucked into it. I blame this one directly on Mona; she was watching Season 5, having been a fan for a long time, and I started absorbing it by osmosis. And discovered that I really really liked it. Almost, almost to the extent that I might get fannish by seeking out LJ comms and writing fic. I'm trying to convince myself not to on the latter though because if my BSG obsession is any indication, it's only a matter of time before I get smacked in the side of the skull with a longfic idea. And I need another longfic project like I need a hole in the head.

Your biggest fandom disappointment of the year?
Caprica being canceled. :( I LOVED the finale though.

Your TV boyfriend of the year?
Jamie Bamber, obviously, is still a high contender. But I got to renew my utter adoration of Steve Buscemi, as well, which ROCKED.

Your TV girlfriend of the year?
Kara. And Padmé. Duh. (Yes, I know she's not on TV. Shaddap.) But also Debra Morgan. And, as mentioned, I developed a tremendous and terminal crush on Sigourney Weaver after seeing Avatar. XD

Your biggest squee moment of the year?
Probably when I found out AMC was making an entire TV show about a zombie apocalypse. And then when I read they'd renewed it for a second season. Zombies. ZOMBIES!

The most missed of your old fandoms?
BSG, unquestionably. It's still fairly active, but that doesn't hold a candle to the way it was right in the middle of the show. I came in right on the cusp of that, so I got to experience the huge jolt of activity with Season 4, but then it started to dribble off.

The fandom you haven't tried yet, but want to?
Breaking Bad. This is another one Mona has largely succeeded in convincing me to watch, hehe. She is a horrible horrible enabler. I've asked for the Season 1 DVDs for Christmas so I can start playing catch-up. :)

Your biggest fan anticipations for the New Year?
Hopefully, hopefully finishing Insanity Underrated by March. Also hopefully hopefully starting to write To Ignite the Stars again, and finishing it. The second seasons of Boardwalk Empire and The Walking Dead.
