I was reading the newspaper last night when All Star K came on the tv. Allan K and Jaya were standing on their usual platforms and they were saying things about the late Francis Magalona- the episode turned out to be a tribute to "the man from manila".
They sang Kaleidoscope World. Along with the feeling of sadness that came over me (i idolized Francis M's patriotism), i felt an unexplainable yearning to sing along with them. Funny. I was suddenly reminded of how long i studied-memorized-practiced that darn song --- only to sing just the first few bars infront of a hypercritical audience years ago. FYI: the first few bars are the easiest parts to sing, other than that i really found the song difficult.
Ironically enough, I am emotionally attached to it: it was, after all, our batch song in UP Sandigan.
I know I have posted a very publicly consumed bulletin post in Friendster with this same undercurrent a few years ago. However, it was prompted by an entirely different thing altogether-or person, rather. Someone i bumped into while running at the Sunken Garden trying not to get my dress wet from the rain. As most of my friends already know, I have joined and became active in four orgs in my entire stay in UP, and while UP Astrosoc will forever be my undying amore, UP Sandigan will always be my first love.
I heart UP Sandigan. And whenever I come back to UP, while my body may be at the Observatory, my mind does drift to the tambayan at the Main Lib... how it used to look like with my name plastered on the bench, how it was so easy to just sleep there after manning the booth at the UP Fair instead of going home...how it was so challenging to deflect the Koreans milling around wanting to "practicing their Englishing" with you.
But I digress. And i do not do much indulging in nostalgia either - especially the kind that will make me wear my heart on my sleeve (hehe. Attention: Irene Emma)
So i shook my head. =) Only to spiral further into reality when i realized how badly jaya was distorting the song. Ah, life. Really now, our practiced version was more engaging than their attempt. Hehe.
