This Life Day

Mara opened the door to her temporary quarters in the old Imperial Palace on Coruscant to find Luke Skywalker standing on the other side. He was carrying a box wrapped in brightly-colored flimsy and grinning broadly.

“What do you want?” she demanded.

He held out the box. “Happy Life Day!”

“It’s not my life day,” she said, but stepped aside to let him in.

“You don’t know that,” he said, gently.

Mara let out a breath. She wouldn’t have taken that remark from anyone else - the records of her childhood, her birth and family, had been lost with the fall of the Empire, if they’d ever existed at all. “No, I don’t,” she admitted. “I’ve never needed one.”

"No one needs to know their life day,” said Luke, frowning. “But that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t have one.”

“And you decided it should be today?”

Luke set the box on the counter of her cook unit. “If you have another day in mind, I can get you another present, but it might be harder to reschedule the dinner.”

“Skywalker…”

“Nothing fancy,” he assured her quickly. “Or public. Just dinner with friends.”

Mara snorted. “I have friends here?”

“Of course you do,” Luke said, sounding hurt. “Me. Han and Leia. Chewie, Lando, Wedge - I contacted Kardde, but he couldn’t make it. He sends his best, though.”

“That’s…” Mara stared at him for a long moment, then asked, softly, “Why?”

Luke smiled. “Why not? Now, aren’t you going to open your present?”

She picked up the box. “Will there be cake at this non-fancy, non-public dinner?”

“Of course.”

Mara smiled. “Of course,” she repeated, then let out a huff of laughter. “Why are you always so nice to me, farmboy?”

“Because you deserve someone to be. And I want to.”

“Oh,” she said.
